Ducati Hypermotard 796: damn sexy, the little sister !
Less intimidating than its 1100 cc elder, the Ducati Hypermotard 796 offers almost as much for almost € 3,000 less: a devilishly enticing program that Site put to the test during an exciting summer test ! Test.
Finally a little Hypermot ’ !
It took more than two years for Ducati to finally decline its famous Hypermotard 1100 in a more accessible displacement, both financially and in terms of driving (read).
As its trade name does not indicate – a curious habit specific to Ducati -, the Hypermotard 796 is thus based on an L-twin of 803 cc, a block with two valves per cylinder with air cooling – but equipped with ‘a small oil cooler! – already used in the past on S2Rs. But the "touiin" was nicely muscled by the Italians and he took the opportunity to display four additional horses and a handful of torque: in the end, 81 horsepower and 75.5 Nm of torque at 6,250 rpm.
On the aesthetic side, the Hypermot ‘796 takes exactly the same lines as the 1100, a tasty and successful mix between trendy roadster and racy Supermotard: at the risk of stating a commonplace, the Italians undoubtedly remain the kings of originality and design! The white version of our test is, in a way, a "Dark" version, which allows the manufacturer to charge it below the € 9,000 mark (€ 8,990 exactly).
For the version all dressed in red, it will cost € 310 more: yes, the red pigment is expensive on the other side of the Alps! But this white color (also available in shiny black) is quite successful. In addition, with its matte black finish, the kind of duckbill that acts as the front fender is less visually shocking: it is indeed the only detail that is not always unanimous on the machine…
Beautiful, good, Du … what kind of thing !
The finish is of a good standard, as is the quality of the equipment of the Belle de Bologna. As on the 1100 cc, the double exhaust outlet under the saddle still leaves a breathtaking view of the magnificent aluminum single-sided arm. We also find the wide handlebars including LED turn signals and adorned with mirrors at each end. On the braking side, it’s also very good with 305 mm discs pinched by Brembo radial calipers, and braided hoses.
Undeniably, the Hypermotard 796 is more accessible than its big sister: the saddle is 20 mm lower (825 mm against 845 mm), while the weight is lowered by some 12 kg (167 kg dry): that’s it enough to reassure the small templates who flash on the inimitable line of the Italian !
In addition, the position is very natural, if not really comfortable: painful over long distances, it is perfect for a quick and intuitive handling. Once in the saddle, you experience an incredible feeling of lightness and compactness: the impression of having a very small front wheel placed just under the handlebars is also surprising during the first kilometers !
