The widow of Japanese pilot Yoshinari Matsushita, on the Isle of Man, has just published on the an open letter with surprising accents for a Western mind…
Chieko Matsushita – who was personally opposed to her husband’s participation in the Tourist Trophy – apologizes to "Matsu" "friends and supporters" for this "unfortunate consequence".
She calls on all those who supported her to pursue their dreams, while being delighted to have been able to discover, with their daughter, this "wonderful place" that is the Isle of Man.
"Dear friends and supporters of Matsu,
First of all, I sincerely apologize for this unfortunate consequence to everyone who shared Yoshinari Matsushita’s dream, supported and encouraged him in any way..
But competing in the Tourist Trophy was what he himself had wanted. I believe he is deeply grateful to have been able to participate four times and I ask you all to accept my most sincere thanks..
He must be feeling bitterly disappointed that he wasn’t able to compete in TT this year despite all of this generous support, and I guess he now wants to apologize directly to each of you..
The people in the pits, the paddocks and the team members are all nice and warm and I imagine Matsu is feeling good on the Isle of Man. As he had told me before, the island is a beautiful place, with a very rich nature. The weather has been mild since we arrived and I think it’s a good place for a motorcycle trip.
It was my first time watching the Tourist Trophy and I was very surprised to see the speed of the motorcycles. To be honest, seeing the race unfold before my eyes, I wondered if it was really his wish to compete in such a risky race. But the atmosphere in the villages, the kindness of the people, all this makes for a wonderful place. I thank Matsu for allowing our daughter and I to come here.
Matsu said "it is better to take up a challenge, whatever it is, so as not to regret your life, because no one knows when he is going to die". He also said that one of the reasons he continued to run, despite his younger age (43, Editor’s note), was that he wanted to pass on to the younger generation the desire to fulfill his dreams..
I had personally opposed his participation in the Tourist Trophy, but at the same time I liked his way of thinking and I understood him.
I would be delighted if the people he inspired and who shared a common dream with him could pursue the dream.
Finally, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all those who surrounded and helped him during his life. On behalf of my husband, Matsu, thank you very much ".
Truly,
Chieko Matsushita[MNC translation -]
