WSBK 2013: Ducati with Checa, but without Althea !
Carlos Checa will ride well next year in the World Superbike on the 1199 Panigale RS13 and will benefit from the status of official rider, but the Althea and Ducati team put an end to three years of collaboration crowned by four titles in 2011. Explanation.
Second in the Superstock 1000 in 2012 thanks to Eddi La Marra and his Barni Racing Team, the 1199 Panigale will perform in 2013 its first laps (17 inches!) In the Superbike category. And the Bologna plant confirmed the renewal of the Checa contract last night..
The Spanish pilot, who has just passed the 40th birthday mark, will therefore be responsible for developing – and for winning! – the "new" Superbike des Rouges. Carlos has already participated in three series of tests at the controls of the "RS13" and wanted to be positive at the end of the last outing, the first against the leaders of the discipline (read).
"This is a new marriage, and the rider needs to understand the bike and the bike needs to be modified to suit the rider", explained a few days ago the director of Ducati Corse, Ernesto Marinelli, whose main concern was to make the twin" supercar "both more docile and more powerful !
"We take more turns and we have more power than before", assured the Italian boss:"I don’t want to say how many, but we have a few more horses"Without going further into the figures, Marinelli believes that the Panigale will not reach the power of 4-cylinders.
"We’re not gonna close the gap we had this year (with the 1198, NDLR) and which was very important due to the restriction on admission", complains the boss of Ducati Corse:"our strength will have to come from other areas", such as braking for example, speed of passage in a curve, agility or traction when exiting a corner.
"We have further improved braking", Marinelli also pointed out."The handling as well, but for the moment we have kept the fork that Carlos likes. However, new forks are scheduled for our next tests.".
Tests that the Toro n ° 7 will no longer perform with his "team" Althea, since the manager of the titled team in 2011 – in Superbike and Superstock, manufacturers and pilots! – decided not to run Ducati anymore…
"Despite the intention of both sides to continue the collaboration, an agreement that meets the requirements of both Althea Racing Team and the Bologna manufacturer was not found in 2013", declared Ducati last night.
Already last year, the agreement between the two parties was not found until the very last weekend of competition, when their season had been perfect … Checa, he was then ready. to go to BMW (read) !
"The exceptional relationship that Ducati has had with Team Althea Racing, combined with the friendship and gratitude to the owner of the team, Genesio Bevilacqua, for his continuous efforts and loyalty over these years, suggests that d ‘other forms of cooperation between Ducati and Team Althea may still be possible in the future", hopes the builder…
For 2013, however, separation is assured. In what structure will Checa and its factory Panigale RS13 evolve? Which bike will the Althea team prepare for its rider Davide Giugliano? Answers to follow naturally on the Site: stay connected !
