Motorcycle accident statistics 2019: Risk of death four times higher
Motorcycle accident statistics 2019
Killing risk four times as high
When motorcyclists are the cause of accidents, they were often traveling too fast. In most cases, however, motorists are also involved in the accidents. And whether it is the motorcyclist’s fault or not, he is the most at risk.

In the following we use the term Motorcyclists for all users – drivers and passengers – of motorcycles with an official registration number. This includes users of motorcycles, light motorcycles, large scooters and three- and heavy four-wheeled vehicles. Two-wheelers that are subject to insurance such as mopeds, mopeds, mopeds, S-Pedelecs as well as three- and light four-wheel vehicles are hereinafter referred to as Mopeds designated.
542 fatally injured motorcyclists
In 2019, 28,426 motorcyclists had an accident on German roads, according to figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Desatis). In 2019, statisticians counted a total of 14,213 accidents for small motorcycles. Compared to 2018, the number of motorcyclists involved in accidents in 2019 fell by 11.1 percent, and for mopeds it is a decrease of 5.8 percent. 542 motorcyclists were killed and 63 fatally injured on a moped. This means that the number of motorcyclists killed fell by 12.4 percent compared to the previous year, and the number of small motorcyclists by 19.2 percent.
Motorcyclists particularly at risk
What we all know is once again confirmed in 2019 by the accident statistics of the Federal Statistical Office: Motorcyclists live more dangerously than other road users – in terms of the risk of injury as well as the risk of dying in an accident. Based on 1,000 registered motorcycles with license plates, six motorcyclists had an accident in 2019. In the car statistics, there are five casualties for every 1,000 cars.
The risk of being fatally injured in road accidents is also higher: there are twelve motorcyclists killed for every 100,000 motorcycles with license plates. In the case of car occupants, there are three fatalities per 100,000 registered vehicles.
Risk of death more than four times as high
There were 4.4 million motorcycles with registration plates in Germany in 2019. 46.6 million cars were registered nationwide. The risk of being killed as a motorcyclist was therefore more than four times as high as the risk for motorists in 2019. However, this risk has not increased in recent years. In relation to the population, the risk of dying in a traffic accident actually decreased.
The interactive accident atlas provides an overview of what happened in the accident.
Most accidents in June
In 2019, the months with the most motorcycle accidents were June with 15.5 percent, August with 14.1 percent, July with 13.3 percent, followed by September with 12.3 percent of accidents. In January, only 1.1 percent of the motorcyclists had an accident.
Young drivers particularly at risk
35.4 percent of the injured and 18.3 percent of the killed motorcycle users were between the ages of 15 to 24 years. In relation to the number of vehicles, this means: for every 100,000 registered motorcycles, 71 drivers between the ages of 15 and 24 died last year. 60 of those killed were between 18 and 24 years old. “This is three times the value for the 25 to 35 year olds, who have the second highest risk of death in relation to the population.” In this age group, a total of 23 motorcyclists were killed in 2019. So the information from the Federal Statistical Office.
Car is the most common opponent in an accident
31 percent of the injured and 27.4 percent of the killed motorcyclists were injured in single accidents, i.e. no other vehicles or pedestrians were involved. If, on the other hand, other road users are involved in a motorcycle accident, 80.8 percent of the cases are a car – according to the statistics for the accident year 2019. In 26,221 collisions between a car and a motorcycle, 1,653 car occupants and 22,036 motorcyclists had an accident. 93 percent of the accident victims were motorcyclists or passengers, with over half, namely 68.3 percent, of these accidents being caused by car drivers.
Speed as the cause of the accident
In 22.2 percent of accidents with personal injury, the police attested motorcyclists involved one “unmatched speed”. There was also one among the drivers of mopeds “unmatched speed” the most common cause of accidents with personal injury (12.6 percent). With 5.3 percent of those involved in accidents, they were also particularly often under the influence of alcohol in relation to other vehicle drivers.
Young people and seniors on mopeds
Young people and seniors are particularly likely to have accidents on mopeds: The 15 to 17-year-old age group comprised 24 percent of all accidents and 17.5 percent of all killed drivers and passengers of mopeds. 8.6 percent of the crashed and 28.6 percent of the fatally injured users of mopeds were 65 years of age or older.
Conclusion
Motorcyclists are the most vulnerable motorized road users – this is really not surprising. Nevertheless, the accident statistics are interesting every year. Especially if one finding is that the number of motorcyclists killed fell by 12.4 percent and the number of those killed by 11.1 percent. And that with a steadily increasing number of new motorcycle registrations: 112,122 new registrations in 2019 contrast with 107,534 new registrations in 2018.
