The interministerial delegate for road safety, Emmanuel Barbe, this morning signed a partnership charter with nine partners to launch the "Airbag plan". Objective: integrate players from the entire chain to the end user to encourage them to buy – and especially wear -: from driving license training to the purchase of a motorized two-wheeler by the way by his insurance.

"Airbag manufacturers, motorized two-wheelers, salespeople, driving teachers, insurers and users share with the Ministry of the Interior the common objective of reducing accidents among users of motorized two-wheelers and note that that the latter do not sufficiently know the advantages of wearing an airbag, inflatable personal protective equipment for motorcyclists, whereas this equipment makes it possible, like the helmet, to significantly reduce the risk of serious or even fatal injuries ", indicate the signatories of the charter.

Commitments of the Road Safety Delegation (DSR)

  • Coordinate the "airbag plan"
  • Organize the press conference to launch the operation scheduled for spring 2019 (this morning, Editor’s note)
  • Communicate with the general public to make this equipment known and encourage motorcyclists to wear an airbag
  • Provide driving schools and airbag vendors with communication equipment

Insurers’ commitments

Within the FFA and the Attitude Prevention association, motorcycle insurers undertake to:

  • Integrate the incentive to wear an airbag in the priority objectives of the State-insurers agreement
  • Continue the relay, via their supports and those of their members, of the campaign to promote the wearing of the airbag
  • Systematically integrate awareness of the airbag vest into their prevention actions focused on motorized two-wheelers
  • Encourage their members to recommend the acquisition of the airbag and promote its use to their policyholders by any means according to their strategic choices

Commitments of driving teachers

The CNPA "road education and related professions", UNIDEC and UNIC undertake to encourage their members to:

  • Equip each student with an airbag during training sessions carried out in circulation
  • Offer each student a discount voucher valid at their partner airbag vendors (x commitments are subject to a commercial contract established between the motorcycle school and a partner airbag vendor)

Commitments of points of sale and repair

The CNPA "national cycle and motorcycle trade and repair sector" undertakes to encourage its members to:

  • Present the airbag to each customer wishing to acquire a new or used motorized two-wheeler and systematically lend an airbag to any customer wishing to try a motorcycle
  • Respond favorably to requests from salespeople wishing to participate in airbag training courses offered by equipment manufacturers
  • Reserve a dedicated airbag sales area
  • Provide mechanics with an airbag for each road test
  • Offer motorcycle schools an attractive commercial contract in order to promote the acquisition of airbags for students who have obtained the AM, A1 or A2 driving license, or who have passed the 7-hour B / A1 license and A2 / A bridge training

Commitments of motorcycle and scooter manufacturers

The motorized two-wheeler branch of the International Automobile and Motorcycle Union (CSIAM) undertakes to encourage its members to:

  • Offer motorcycle schools, via retailer networks, an attractive commercial contract to facilitate the acquisition of airbags to equip students during their training period
  • Set up airbag promotion operations throughout the year
  • Support the training of motorcycle salespeople in the airbag product, its technology and road safety in general
  • Support the acquisition of an airbag by sellers of motorcycles, for professional and personal use (sellers are the first to recommend this equipment to their customers)

Commitments of airbag manufacturers

The Group of Motorcycle Airbag Professionals (GPAM) undertakes to encourage its members to:

  • Offer motor schools, via distributor networks, an attractive commercial contract to facilitate the acquisition of airbags to equip students during their training period
  • Set up airbag promotion operations throughout the year, particularly at trade fairs, during major motorcycle events and in companies for their employees using a 2WD
  • Support the training of motorcycle salesmen in the airbag product, its technology and road safety in general
  • Support the acquisition of an airbag by sellers of motorcycles, for professional and personal use (sellers are the first to recommend this equipment to their customers)
  • Ensure, regardless of brands, permanent promotion of the airbag via all the communication tools available on the market

No quantified targets

The signatories will meet "during the 4th quarter of 2019" in order to verify compliance with the commitments, analyze the various feedbacks and study the possibility of renewing the airbag plan, but "we will not think long because it is certain that the airbag plan will be renewed, "said the interministerial delegate for road safety who does not set specific objectives for this campaign..

"We did not really think about the objectives, but after that we noticed a very significant increase in airbag sales which made us very happy", rejoiced Emmanuel Barbe interviewed by the Journal moto du Net.

Finally, estimating that only 4% of bikers and scooter riders today wear an airbag (approximately 120,000 drivers out of 3 million), Mr. Barbe has repeated a good ten times that he did not want to make the motorcycle airbag compulsory. .
