The motorcycle license is not only a permit to drive on public premises, but also for many people the ticket to freedom. To buy the ticket, it takes patience and a little change.

Theory is not just about scrutinizing arcs. Exercises familiarize the students with the handling of the motorcycle. In a clear theory lesson, the examination material is usually better memorized than in a quiet room buffalo.

It is important that the learner driver feels that he is in good hands and trusts the driving instructor; the design of the lessons should suit the type. It is worth comparing different schools, not just to determine price differences.

Once you have decided on a school, bring your identity card, proof of a first aid course, a biometric passport photo, an eye test and the registration fee with you to register. After that, it’s time to get on the bike at least once or twice a week and practice, practice, practice.

The decision has been made: I need a motorcycle license! However, many driving license applicants do not know which classes there are, from what age which driving license can be obtained, what a motorcycle license costs and what the driving school training looks like. MOTORRAD answers all important questions about the motorcycle license.
What does a motorcycle license cost?
The cost of a motorcycle license depends a lot on where it is obtained. Driving school prices in southern German cities are a good third higher than in rural Brandenburg, for example. The number of hours of practice required depends on the learner’s talent.
Various portals quote around 1,250 euros in current price examples including all fees for the eye test, first aid course or exam registration for class A, calculated on the basis of the driving school prices in Berlin with twelve hours of practice. If a learner driver needs 20 hours (average value), the license costs more than 1,500 euros – in cheap Berlin. However, we consider this price estimate to be too low. Are in Stuttgart or Munich 2,000 to 2,500 euros more realistic sizes for one Motorcycle license.
Overview of the costs for the motorcycle license
Driving school registration fee: The registration fee for the motorcycle license at the driving school includes general expenses as well as the theory lessons. In some cases, learning materials such as driving school forms for practicing are also included in the price. Overall, that depends on the region and driving school 200 to 300 euros.
Eye test: There is a statutory fee of 6.43 euros required.
First aid course: The German catalog of fines states: “If you did not take the first aid course for your driver’s license, but for professional reasons, for example, the first aid course is usually only valid for two years! If you do not get your driving license within two years of taking part in the course, the course is still valid for the driving license, provided it is suitable according to FeV.” Note d. Red .: The abbreviation FeV stands for: Driving license regulation. Cost: approx. 20 to 40 euros.
Practice drives: Fall per hour of practice (45 minutes) 30 to 50 euros on. The number of hours of practice depends, of course, on the learner’s learning progress. A particularly high number of practice rides can make the cost of the motorcycle license significantly more expensive.
Special trips: The 12 special trips that are mandatory for all motorcycle license classes are included approx. 40 to 60 euros per trip To book: 5 cross-country journeys, 4 motorway journeys, 3 dark journeys, each 45 minutes per driving hour.
Driving school fee for introducing the theoretical test: If this fee is not already included in the registration fee approx. 30 to 60 euros due. The driving school estimates this for the administrative effort associated with the registration. If the exam is not passed, the fees apply again.
TuV fee for the theoretical test: For the theory test, the TuV 22.49 euros for the administrative work and the examiner.
Driving school fee for introducing the practical test: The fee includes the administrative work involved in registering for the test and paying the driving instructor who is present for the practical driving test. The costs amount to depending on the driving school 80 to 180 euros. If the practical test is not passed, the fees are due again.
TuV fee for the practical test: Depending on the motorcycle license class and whether it is a license extension, the fee at the TuV is approx. 80 to 120 euros.
Fee for issuing the driver’s license: For the issuance of the driver’s license, depending on the driver’s license office, apply for the first issue approx. 30 to 50 euros on.
Driving license classes of the motorcycle license
In the Driving license class A Classes A2, A1 and AM are included. Anyone who has the “big” motorcycle license can drive all motorcycles and combinations without speed or displacement restrictions.
the Driving license class A2, The “48 HP driving license” is the motorcycle driving license for motorcycles with or without a sidecar with up to 35 kW that are not derived from a motorcycle with an output of more than 70 kW (“throttled”) and have a maximum power to weight ratio of 0.2 kW / kg.
the driver’s license the Class A1 includes light motorcycles up to 125 cm³ and 11 kW as well as a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW / kg.
The “50s class” AT THE is the driving license for mopeds such as mopeds or scooters. This includes two- and three-wheel mopeds with a design-related speed of no more than 45 km / h and a maximum displacement of 50 cm³. Bicycles with auxiliary engines or four-wheeled light motor vehicles are also included, provided they do not exceed 45 km / h or 50 cm³ cubic capacity due to their design. For electric vehicles, a nominal continuous output of no more than 4 kW or a maximum empty weight of 350 kg without battery applies.

Motorcycle license and age: who is allowed to drive what?
- Minimum age for the AM driving license class and for the 125 class A1: from 16 years
- Driving license class A2: at least 18 years
- Direct entry driving license class A: 24 years

Visually, the new 125 models don’t have to hide from their bigger siblings.
Anyone who has been in class A2 for at least 2 years can switch to class A from the age of 20 – however, a practical test is required again. This is also the case with the rise from A1 to A2: If you first gain two years of experience in driving license class A1, you only have to take a shortened practical test for class A2.
Anyone who obtained their driver’s license before April 1, 1980, at that time class 3, can also drive class A1 vehicles. Category 4 license holder, “80s driver’s license”, may also drive vehicles of the driving license class A1, depending on the place and date of issue. The driver’s license must have been issued in the Federal Republic or GDR before April 1, 1980.
The Tuv Nord also says: “Holders of a driving license of class A2, which was issued between January 19, 2013 and December 27, 2016, may continue to drive motorcycles in Germany that are derived from more than 70 kW.”
Motorbike driving license class A1 and AM
Minimum age for driving license classes A1 (125) and AM: 16 years. Those who first gain two years of experience in driving license class A1 only have to take a shortened practical test for class A2 (from the age of 18).
Motorbike driving license class A2
Minimum age for driving license class A2: 18 years. Anyone who has been in class A2 for at least 2 years can switch to class A from the age of 20 – however, a practical test is required again.
The TuV also says: “Holders of a driving license of class A2, which was issued between January 19, 2013 and December 27, 2016, may continue to drive motorcycles in Germany that are derived from more than 70 kW.”
Motorcycle license class A
Minimum age for direct entry driving license class A: 24 years. This means that all motorcycles with a design-related maximum speed of more than 45 km / h (engine output of more than 35 kW or ratio of output to weight (empty mass) more than 0.2 kW / kg) can be driven without restriction.
Motorbike license before April 1st, 1980
Anyone who obtained their driver’s license before April 1, 1980, at that time class 3, can also drive class A1 vehicles. Category 4 license holder, “80s driver’s license”, may also drive vehicles of the driving license class A1, depending on the place and date of issue. To do this, the driver’s license must have been issued in the Federal Republic or GDR before April 1, 1980. For these people the same applies as for holders of the driving license class A1: After at least two years in possession of class 3 or 4 (with restrictions as described above), advancement to driving license class A2 is possible through a practical test.
And that also applies to those who switched from their class A2 acquired after January 19, 2013 to the unrestricted driving license class A. “upgrade” would like.
Too small for a motorcycle license?
A reader wrote to us on this topic: “At 1.57 meters, my girlfriend is really not a giant and is currently confronted with the following problems: According to several driving schools, it is essential that both feet can be placed flat on the ground in order to pass the motorcycle driving test. (…) The only possibility for her to get a motorcycle license was therefore to acquire the driving license class A2, since there are smaller training motorcycles in this class, although she is already over 24 years old, and thus a direct acquisition of class A would have been possible.”

Natalie is 1.53 meters tall and 68 centimeters inside leg. Finding a driving school turned out to be difficult for them.
Our research has shown: There is no legal basis for this. At least not, for drivers who are taller than 150 centimeters. But: It is at the discretion and responsibility of the driving instructor not to start or break off the training if it is not possible to use the vehicle safely (e.g. because of the small body size).
The Baden-Wurttemberg Association of Driving Instructors gave us the following information on request:
“It is inconceivable for us that a learner driver can safely practice with a motorcycle if he can only reach the ground with one foot. He must come to the ground with at least both feet on the balls of the feet (not tiptoe) so that it is responsible to take driving lessons with him.
We would therefore urgently advise every driving instructor against starting training in such cases, also from a liability point of view. “
Dekra, one of the testing organizations in addition to TuV, makes the following statement:
“There is no requirement that both feet can be placed flat on the ground as a prerequisite for passing the practical two-wheeler test. It is crucial that the above-mentioned requirements (editor’s note: vehicle control in all traffic situations) including the basic driving tasks are met during the test drive and that the motorcycle is safely mastered in the practical test. “
The TuV quotes from the test guideline (IV No. 2.3.1.1.2):
“The prerequisite for taking the driving test is the applicant’s ability to handle the motorcycle independently. This includes setting up and removing from the stand – center or side stand – and, if necessary, sliding it to the side without motor power into the downhill position as well as starting (with an electric starter, if available) the motorcycle with all related hand movements. The ability to handle independently is not given if the applicant cannot put the motorcycle on the stand or take it down from him, the motorcycle tips over or if he wants to start off with the stand not properly retracted. “
Motorbike license with a height of less than 1.50 meters

Natalie took a taster course for short-legged people at the Black Forest Biker Weekend 2016. The right motorcycle: a lowered Kawasaki ER-6n.
If the driving license authority determines when applying for the driver’s license that the applicant is of short stature (height less than 150 cm), “the authority commissions a suitability assessment by an officially recognized expert or examiner (aaSoP) from the technical test center (in the West German federal states the TuVs, in the East German federal states DEKRA). “, so the information of the Dekra experts.
The statement also states:
“The assessment is carried out in accordance with VdTuV information sheet 745 (https://www.vdtuev.de/shop/merkblaetter/habenliste). If a two-wheeler license is acquired, the assessment is carried out on the two-wheeler concerned by checking to what extent the steering, pedals, seat position and seat design have to be coordinated. In the event that the short stature is associated with a reduction in strength, a specialist medical report may be required as a prerequisite for the assessment. The aaSoP checks its specifications in an intensive driving test.
As a result of the assessment, the aaSoP suggests restrictions and requirements to the authority that promise optimal success with regard to safe participation in road traffic.
Like every other applicant, the applicant with short stature must also prove in the test drive that he is able, among other things, to drive his vehicle independently and safely, even in difficult traffic situations. The applicant must show that he is familiar with the dangers of road traffic and the behavior required to avert them.
In the case of a two-wheeler test, basic driving tasks, such as slalom, braking with the greatest possible deceleration, etc. must be performed. These serve to prove that the applicant can handle the motorcycle independently.
If this is proven, the practical test is passed. “
Find the right driving school
Not all driving schools are the same. Accordingly, the choice of the right driving school for acquiring a motorcycle license is of enormous importance. We have some tips for choosing the right motorcycle driving school:
- The driving school should allow a free theory taster lesson. The learner driver can determine whether the driving instructor suits him.
- The theory lessons are given by a qualified driving instructor and not by an assistant. The practical training takes place from start to finish with one and the same driving instructor.
- A good two-wheel driving instructor often drives a motorcycle privately.
- A good driving school will not let its learner drivers drive without full protective clothing.
- The first motorcycling lesson takes place in a cordoned off or at least low-traffic area. The driving instructor drives there with the learner driver as a passenger. Only on the field is there a briefing and first contact with the motorcycle.
- Only when the basic driving exercises have been mastered does the driving instructor ride a motorcycle himself. At the beginning he should drive ahead of the learner driver. In preparation for the practical test, he drives the car for one or two hours to get the learner used to the test drive.
- The practical exercises should first be carried out by the motorcycle instructor, then it is the learner’s turn.
- The total number of driving hours is not a criterion for a good driving school. The training should be individually tailored to the skills and learning progress of the motorcycle learner.
- The special trips should only be held after the basic training has been completed.
- The motorcycles of a good driving school are in perfect technical condition. All-rounder machines are best suited for two-wheeler training.
- A good education is fun!
Theory and theory test for motorcycle license
For the motorcycle license, extensive training in theory and practice is required. the theoretical part consists 12 lessons of 90 minutes each, in which the basic material is taught and four 90-minute theory lessons with special knowledge on the subject of motorcycles.
If the driver’s license is extended, the basic material is reduced to 6 theory hours for holders of class B. Holders of driving license classes A1 or A2 can get to the next higher class after 2 years and only have to take a shortened practical test.
If you want to practice for theory lessons or the theoretical exam, you can go to MOTORRAD take the driver’s license test online for free with the driving school forms of all classes.
To the Theory test To pass for the motorcycle driving license is valid in the theoretical test 30 questions to answer. Of these, 20 questions deal with the raw material and ten with the motorcycle additive. A maximum of 10 points of error may be made, with all questions each having fixed values of 2 to 5 points. If you already have a class B driving license and have a license extension, the catalog of questions is reduced to 20 questions and a maximum of 6 error points in order to still pass.
The theory test can be taken at the earliest three months before reaching the minimum age for the corresponding motorcycle license. There is no prescribed minimum age to begin theoretical training; as a rule, it does not begin until one year before the required minimum age at the earliest.
Practical exam for a motorcycle license
The practical part of the training on the way to a motorcycle license is divided into practice hours and compulsory hours. The number of practice hours is at the discretion of the driving instructor and depends individually on the learner’s ability and learning progress. For the Compulsory lessons are 12 special trips to 45 minutes each required. These are divided into 5 cross-country journeys, 4 motorway journeys and 3 driving hours in the dark.
the practical exam for the motorcycle license takes 60 minutes. If the driver’s license is extended from A1 or A2 to the next higher class, the test is reduced to 40 minutes. The test may only be taken one month before the minimum age for a motorcycle license is reached.
Quick courses for the motorcycle license
Many driving schools now offer quick courses for acquiring a motorcycle license. The full driving school program is unwound within a very short time. The advantages of such crash courses are obvious. Instead of investing several months in training, you can sometimes get your motorcycle license within a week.
In addition, regular motorcycling keeps you going and you don’t have to keep getting used to riding a motorcycle. During normal training, there may be longer breaks between driving lessons.
To do this, most participants have to take vacation time to complete a crash course. The price is that Crash course to the motorcycle license mostly a bit expensive than the normal training variant.
Interview with a driving instructor and driving school owner
Jorg Holzmann is a committed motorcyclist, Kawasaki fan and owner of a driving school in Stuttgart-Wangen. He himself did his class 1 (today A) in 1995.
MOTORCYCLE: How many driving lessons do the students need on average today for class A2?
Jorg Holzmann: On average, that’s twelve special trips and 20 hours of practice. But if you already have an A1, you don’t need any special drives for the A2 and only about five hours of practice, depending on your driving ability.
jkuenstle.de
Jorg Holzmann is the owner of a driving school in Stuttgart-Wangen.
MOTORCYCLE: Quite a program, at least compared to before.
Jorg Holzmann: No, you can’t say that like that. Because the requirements in road traffic have increased steadily, just as in the practical test. In addition, learner drivers used to have significantly more previous experience and skills in handling motorized vehicles. For example from the moped.
MOTORCYCLE: Old hands in particular like to argue that the many compulsory lessons for a motorcycle license are just money-making. Is not that so?
Jorg Holzmann: If you look at the accident figures, you see it differently. Single accidents on country roads are a real problem. Most dangerous situations happen there, as I know from conversations with former learner drivers. Reasons are changing road surfaces, approaching curves that you misjudge, wetness or obstacles on the road and the associated rapid course corrections with steering impulse technology. It has a lot to do with experience. A driving school can only teach the basics. The more the better.
MOTORCYCLE: Should motorcycle newbies also take part in a safety training course?
Jorg Holzmann: A safety training and then perfection training is more than useful. In the driving school you will learn to brake fully from 50 km / h. After finishing driving school, who will brake hard for practice purposes? And who can call it up if there is an emergency two years later in real traffic? I often experience that braking is still far too weak even with ABS. Without it we don’t even want to talk about it. Perfection and cornering training, emergency braking from 50, 70, 100 – make!
