5-day trials – From the ball !
The
Rocket III is the biggest cruiser ever built: 320 kilos to
dry, 142 hp, 20 mkg of torque at just 2,500 rpm, wheelbase
2535mm, oversized 240/50 tires !
Triumph requires, the Rocket is also a real 3 cylinders, broken
vis-à-vis bi or even 6 cylinders in line !
Everything is disproportionate, except the price which at 17,990 euros
of the model seems almost reasonable !
Discovery
The Rocket wins immediately, with a prominent engine, a double
massive front optic, ottoman-like saddle, rear tire
double the normal … But above all it shines, with 2300 lights and
attracts the eye, the glances.
In the saddle
Once in the saddle, the motorcycle balances easily
and seems almost light.
The feet touch almost flat for the 1.70m pilot. The position
is familiarly custom: arms outstretched, round back,
feet forward but without exaggeration. The position is custom but
less exaggerated than on a Kawasaki VN.
Everything here is traditional, from the clock on the left, to the
gauge at
gasoline on the right through the tachometer (red zone at 7.000
rpm) and the counter (max = 220 km / h). Only the partial double trip
is digital,
and can be adjusted with a long push on the button
chromium.
Small round mirrors are easily adjusted
and offer a limited field of vision.
We are just surprised to find only a single selector, facing the double
selector often present on large customs.
Contact
Key
on the headlight, impulse on the starter, the 3 cylinders
growls as the tachometer needle climbs to 2,000 rpm
before going down.
Clutch, first…
the motorbike sets off naturally and we even completely forget
the weight. And this is the first surprise. The first one
pulls itself up to 80 km / h, while the engine noise changes
radically at the passage of 4,000 rpm to become monstrous. At
overall, the gearbox reveals precise with a rapid change of gears.
In the city
Start-up,
traffic jams, stops and restarts happen naturally.
The passage between cars is relatively easy.
You can choose to change gear or not … because the Rocket resumes
without batting an eyelid from 1,100 rpm, even in fifth gear! And it’s
the second surprise.
The first roundabouts still quickly rub the crutch on the left
and recall that the maximum angle is quickly reached.
Other than that, quick angle changes are no problem
and the counter-steering takes place with disconcerting ease.
Highway
Exit
from Paris, the Rocket rushes forward and pulls on the arms. The
second is willingly led up to 120 km / h and the third
at 150 km / h. It is then not necessary to take the 4th
to afford a good weight training session. But by the way
the top speed, it pulls again and hard !
It is therefore the biker who releases the handle for a cruising rhythm.
reasonable 150 km / h (on German autobahn). The big curves
are linked together with ease and softness.
Departmental
The
Rocket easily goes from the highway to the departmental but
does not allow improvisation in fast curves. Slightly
understeer, you have to prepare your trajectories well; but good
on a curve, it can go fast and hard, without surprise
nor particular waddling, thus allowing a sustained rhythm.
The flexibility of the engine allows passages in village in fifth
and at controlled speed, and without changing speed, resume a
more sustained speed upon exit to resume cruising speed
in a few meters. Because to titillate the right handle, the cavalry arrives
fast and hard, and you hang on to the handlebars to follow.
Night road
The two headlights largely illuminate the road … which lights up in full
headlights. It is then possible to maintain shameful speeds while
by offering good visibility.
Comfort
The rider saddle is wide, particularly good
padded and very comfortable. Even from the side
passenger and even if the saddle is narrower, it is very thick
and comfortable. The suspensions are rather flexible and contribute
to erase irregularities
of the road.
Braking
this slows down and slows down hard, at the risk of surprising people with primers
lock for the rear wheel (solo only). Emergency braking
suits him well, no particular surprise that efficiency. Alone

tendency to dive easily on hard braking.
Convenient
Sissy bar, luggage rack (optional saddlebags), possibility of
put a bag on the tank, the Rocket puts its own to
consider the big trips.
The heavy motorcycle is difficult to handle when stationary. It’s missing
clearly reverse gear even if the turning radius
turns out to be relatively short given the size.
The exhaust pipe coming out on the right heats up a lot
with an iron effect too hot for the pantlon, which
is therefore advisable to protect (I burned
my bottom of pants during the test).
Consumption
The Rocket remains relatively sober with an average consumption of
8 liters per hundred. The gauge proves to be precise from
start to finish, even underestimating the amount of gasoline
remaining. With a 25-liter tank, the final autonomy is
around 270 kilometers.
Conclusion
The
Rocket 2300 may appear as the result of a bet…
won for Triumph which has already sold more than 200
in France.
For those who fear not having the necessary template to master
the machine, if only in terms of weight, it is easy to handle, without
have the agility of a roadster.
It will delight the biker looking for a rewarding motorcycle with two thousand
three hundred superlatives and who likes to divert
the looks.
