For some manufacturers, such as MV-Agusta, retouching, upgrading or replacing a model is a balancing act. Knowing how to modernize while preserving the qualities and charm. And all the more so when the model accounts for a significant share of sales. The 800 Brutale roadster is in this vein. Taking these roots in the brilliant shot of Tamburini fire pencil, the “average” Brutale lets itself be drawn into a movement of renewal. The whole art is to make yourself more dynamic, more desirable, more striking. More MV-Agusta, in short. And continue to claim this strong identity: a hot, admired, fatal roadster.
If everyone will have their own opinion, enthusiasm will be overwhelming for the design of this 800 Butale “II”. Beautiful, spicy, and truly more incisive, the beauty of Schiranna comes out of adolescence to become a beautiful young woman, daring to new clothes. It is even closer to tailor-made. Although the general appearance and analogy are preserved, the eye will not fail to appreciate its more attractive forms; the discerning enthusiast will be delighted to concentrate on the details. An emblematic element of the Brutales, the elliptical headlight features a circle of LEDs of the most beautiful effect. We will be less convinced by the support legs. Then, you just have to browse it gently to discover that its rims have changed, that its shoulders are much more dynamic with the new scoops, and that its rear has become significantly more airy. The rear buckle has got rid of the passenger footrest supports and the flashing-light-registration pack. Combined with the recess under the Turisme Veloce-style saddle, the Brutale’s seat is strikingly pure. Superb !
The fittings mentioned earlier have not disappeared. He simply migrated: all the toe clips are attached to a plate attached to the frame – the rear road bonds are attached to the end of the swingarm..
Modified front mudguard, revised meter block cap, double-stage saddle with stitching, and still the presence of the single-sided arm and three exhaust flutes, finely sharpened for the occasion. We are in the beautiful and the sensual. If MV-Agusta always has a particular appreciation of its finances, we can only bow to the mastery of the design of its machines..
The manufacturer has been tempting bikers for a long time with its design, then comes the moment when you taste its engines. Real thoroughbreds that should be appreciated as it should be: Italian mechanics. Full of character and watts, with great emotion. Except that there, the brand had to deal with fairly drastic Euro4 standards. How is the 3 cylinder doing? Not too bad, and he defends it. The torque progresses, surpassing the old one over the entire rev range and delivering 90% of its force from 3800 rpm.
Where the boiler feels its leaded wings, it is on the power side. Since 2018, the stud has fallen to 110 whipped nags at 11,500 rpm. To achieve this result, the Brutale had to steal its camshafts and pistons from the Turismo Veloce, review the intake ducts, refit the exhaust line and increase the volume of the plenum chamber. Of course, the electronics are reprogrammed accordingly.
A finding ? A bit less powerful, a little slower, spinning under the 240 instead of exceeding them, but more available and more fulfilled. Few people will complain about this dynamic facelift.
In the frenzy of development of scholarly fleas, MV-Agusta is not left out; far from there. It continues to offer a serious package, with disconnectable ABS, Ride-by-Wire, 8-level traction control, multiple injection maps (4 including one customizable *), and as a bonus on this development, the up & down EAS 2.0 shifter. . With him, the upshift and downshift no longer requires the left hand. Almost enough to forget the appearance of a hydraulic clutch.
The dashboard also needed a little sprucing up. And no need to look far: the B3 simply borrowed it from the Rivale. Too bad the fuel gauge is still missing.
The feel of the road, the manly driving, the senses sharpened by the rhythm … An MV does not conceive them as a Japanese. It is much more direct, more singular, for those who understand that the emotion is lived alive. The 800 Brutale, however, seems to have put a little water in its wine. The wheelbase has increased to 1400 mm (+ 2 cm) due to a more open column angle. The bike should gain in stability and be a little less nervous, with less “brutal” reactions. Handling should not suffer as the seat height is raised by 20mm and the handlebars widen. It should even erase the additional 8 kilos it carries.
Other than that, the whole chassis is unchanged. Miss Brutale retains her confidence in a 43mm Marzocchi inverted fork, a steel trellis frame connected to beautiful aluminum frames, Sachs damping to contain the movement of the single-sided swingarm and quality braking. Dual 320mm discs gripped by 4-piston Brembo radial pincers – rear 220mm disc will only have a two-piston clamp.
These elements make it well with a rigor difficult to fault; and comfort for enthusiasts.
It is not easy to modernize a Brutale, let alone an MV-Agusta. The hand must be sure and skillful, the talent certain, the work flawless. The 800 Brutale illustrates this spirit well, with a series of improvements that will delight enthusiasts. The loss of power is anecdotal, and the beautiful promises to be more flexible both in mechanics and in driving. A choice of character.
* More details on the four maps of the MVICS system:
– Normal : the most suitable for everyday use, with 90 horsepower on hand.
– Sport : the engine releases its 116 horsepower with a more direct response.
– Rain : the power is reduced to 80 horses.
– Custom : allows the pilot to set basic parameters such as engine response, rev limiter, engine torque response, throttle sensitivity and engine brake.
The Brutale opens to the A2 category. To be able to be limited to 47.5 horsepower, a specific version of the roadster will be mapped to 70 kW, or 95 horsepower..
