MV Agusta F4R 312

MV Agusta with 312 km / h?

Names are smoke and mirrors? Are you kidding me? Are you serious when you say that. Tea M.V Agusta F4R 312 bears its name as an immodest reference to the top speed it should achieve: 312 km / h. With what the MV? Voluntary self-restriction to 299 km / h or not – the Blue Ribbon of the fastest production motorcycle would be due. Why the subjunctive? Because the F4R 312 is homologated on the basis of the F4 1000 R and therefore with its top speed of 301 km / h. Proud owners have to do without the prestigious entry of 312 km / h in the vehicle documents.

The power that the F4 is supposed to shoot into these spheres of speed is basically derived from a 1000 R engine with a revised cylinder head. In plain language: titanium intake valves with a diameter of 30 instead of the previous 29 millimeters, sharper camshafts with 1.1 millimeters more lift, engine speed limit increased by 500 to around 13,500 rpm, throttle valves with a diameter of 48 instead of 46 millimeters. Measures that achieve high peak performance, which of course was not feasible without a slight loss in torque in the first half of the speed range.

But that is of secondary importance on the racetrack in the royal park at Monza. Even the sound check in the pit lane shows the 312 as a genuine MV. That growling pawing and rattling with a slightly mechanical-grinding undertone: wonderful. Even when driving, the MV gives an excellent acoustic performance. The background noise in pushing mode is even more intense than when accelerating thanks to the engine brake management system called EBS. A bypass valve in the intake tract of the second cylinder funnels air past the closed throttle valve into the combustion chamber in overrun mode in order to reduce rear wheel stamping. It works, if not as effectively, as a good slipper clutch.

Forged wheels inspires handling. Nevertheless, the 312 cannot completely hide its relatively high weight in tight chicanes. A tighter coordination of the suspension elements would have higher priority on the wish list. This is because there is movement in the chassis both when you quickly change lean angles and when you have long acceleration phases such as in the legendary Parabolica.

Forged wheels inspire handling.

But that shouldn’t hide the fact that this engine is really under pressure. Although it does not seem to work as compellingly below 6000 rpm as in the F4 1000 R, above it it tenses its muscles so vigorously and evenly that the factory specification of 183 hp appears credible. The Brembo calipers deliver an impeccable performance. Not just before this unspeakable stop-and-go chicane at the end of the start-finish, which the MV with speedometer 292 is charging towards. In order to be better equipped for high-speed hunting, the R 312 was also given a slightly higher windshield, which more effectively keeps the oncoming wind away from the pilot.
