The first time I saw the Dragster, I thought to myself that a guy with a chainsaw had been locked up in the workshop. Not very smart since it had put it on the bottom of a Brutale, forgetting to turn it off. But anxious to repair his heart, since he had retouched the machine in a more personal style. It’s not the official story at all but I prefer my version.
2018 means a different story for the Dragster, but only for the RR version. It is time to evolve, without really renewing itself but introducing an extra dose of class. MV-Agusta has applied itself, has not taken any risks, preserved the original audacity while bringing it up to date.
A Dragster is above all a Brutale. No wonder that the latter has greatly (fully?) Influenced the rejuvenation of the face. Same dynamic side scoops, same more discreet air intake vents, same LED headlight with stylish contours. In short, the overhaul of one happily benefits the other. However, a handful of little things have changed since the ex-Dragster. The mirrors at the ends of the handlebars have disappeared, the indicators have migrated from place, and for the rear part, a great job has been done. The recess under the saddle, the removal of the passenger footrest plates and the brand new headlight in the headband – all this helps to give the stern an airy and delicate style as much as aggressive.
But the toe clips haven’t really gone away. They are especially much better integrated because they can be raised under the rear frame. The beautiful spoke rims are still there, as is the half-handlebar adjustment system..
the dashboard has changed too. Finally, he was stung at the Brutale. And if the engine block has evolved, it is because it also comes from the cousin, RR side. The 800 Dragster RR relies on a serious cavalry of 140 nags, now under the leadership of Euro4. It has lost nothing in power despite the severity of the standards. The manufacturer has done what was necessary: revised internal parts, optimized intake, modifications to the exhausts, overhauled crankcases, etc … In short, everything that has already been done on all Trepistoni models (F3, Brutale , TV) is applied here. The machine is doing it without gaining a kilo and much more citizen than before. Compared to the E3 version, it rejects half the dirt and its engine announces 48% less mechanical noise – we are not talking about the exhaust sound, which remains manly.
All this is to please Brussels. For everyday life and the user, we will appreciate more the fully revised gearbox. The boiler has been repositioned in the frame to improve torsional rigidity. Was there a need? Not really. But MV thus shows that he always seeks to do better.
Provided as it should be in electronics, the Dragster 800 RR updates its MVICS platform. Ride-by-wire is improved, algorithms and engine maps are new, specifically programmed for it. And there are always 4 Riding Modes under the thumb. Three are pre-calibrated in the factory (Sport – Normal – Rain) and the fourth is largely configurable by the pilot: engine response, rev limiter, engine torque response, throttle grip sensitivity and engine brake. With of course the reinforcement of an 8-level traction control, an up / down shifter, ABS and an ad hoc chassis. Apart from the migration of the engine within it, the chassis does not change. Frame combining tubular steel trellis and aluminum plates, fully adjustable 43 mm Marzocchi inverted fork, single-arm, Sachs shock absorber also adjustable from anywhere, steering damper, Brembo brakes with 4-piston radial calipers with 320 mm discs for the front – 2 piston caliper and 220 mm disc at the rear, 120 mm and 200 mm wide tires, and a dry weight of 168 kilos.
A definite but somewhat timid development for an MV-Agusta. The Dragster 800 RR does what it takes to capitalize on its aura and that of its family. There is something to enjoy as long as you accept the conditions of an Italian. Character, finances and surprises.
