MV-Agusta 675 Brutal 2014

Let’s be frank: this brutal 675, it will hurt very, very badly. MV-Agusta dares what everyone has been hoping for a long time: a roadster with a face to die for, an aura of luxury and prestige, an engine with character, power, lightness, and for an affordable price. Do not look any further ! The mid-size Brutale is the perfect temptation.

From its fabulous racing history to the decade of luxury and prestige that has just passed for it, the Varese brand has forged a name that instantly hits the mark as the pinnacle of motorcycling. Regardless of the model; as long as it’s an MV, you know it’s an exceptional passing craft. With this image capital, the manufacturer is now venturing into the fat of the market with two models that shake up everything: the sporty F3 and this little Brutale. Let’s take a close look at the latter.

Design ! It’s all there, as intense as it was on day one, when the 750 Brutale was unveiled. Massimo Tamburini’s pencil stroke instantly entered the pantheon of the roadster. Finely reworked on the 990/1090, it develops here more youthfulness and a certain impertinence. Less athletic, more mischievous, the design charms with all the warmth of Italian productions. The lighthouse captivates, the body promises, the rear captivates. The 3 exhaust flutes taken from the F3 release the rear wheel as much as possible while hugging it. As for the single-sided arm … Unthinkable that a MV does not have one. Also taken from the sport, it magnifies the rear end as it should.

To please ! This is an exercise that the 675 Brutale already knows how to master. But this is not enough. It takes respondent in the bowels. For its entry into the world of small streetfighters, the Schiranna factory intends to debunk the competition with a fire boiler. A tiny 3-cylinder, 675 cc and narrower than the keyboard you have in front of your hands. Surprising in more ways than one this mill, because it is equipped with a counter-rotating crankshaft – turning upside down helps optimize handling. MV is so proud of its engine that the designers pushed perfectionism to integrate the water and oil pumps into the crankcases for maximum fluidity in the mechanical lines.
The heart of this brutal is an F3 engine barely deflated to deliver punch, roundness and fury. Barely fifteen less horses for the roadster which distributes suddenly 108 at a speed of 12,500 rpm. The first impression would be to compare the raw data with that of the direct competitor: the mill of the Triumph Street Triple. Same engine architecture, same displacement, and same power as the English boiler. Only the couple slowed down, reaching 7 mkg in the English.

Equally powerful, the Varese roadster plays the weight card and announces less weight than the Britton. After the divine mouth and a captivating engine, the 675 Brutale plays a master combination: the chassis and the weight. The latter declares 163 kg dry, 4 less than his direct rival. A truly mini mass! To compare, know that the Street Triple or the 796 Monster are 167 kg and that the Japanese competition is pachydermal: 200 or more for the Z 750, FZ8, Hornet or GSR.
Now the road. And there, it is indeed the chassis that will dictate its law. The brutales have always been undressed sportswomen; the same is true for the 675. The frame bears the house signature: a tubular steel trellis connected to aluminum side plates. Compact and stiff as you wish, it combines with a 43mm inverted fork. The 1380mm wheelbase, minimum weight, and engine architecture will further boost agility. The Brutale promises to be not only sporty but also twirling as it is not allowed. Especially since electronic aids land in the category. They were reserved yesterday for MotoGP and Superbike; they are now in hypersports; tomorrow they will be in the 675 Brutale. A mid-size roadster with traction control, it’s unheard of! And yet, it will be on this machine. A choice of 4 injection maps supported by 8 possible levels of traction-control – and as a bonus, there is room in the ECU memory for your MV dealer to make your own injection mapping. The EAS shifter is installed as standard.
After being generalized on 4-cylinder models, ABS invaded the Tre Pistoni range in 2014. The Bosch control unit, 9MP version, is very small, very light, and is also disconnectable.

MV could have been simple but preferred to be sunny, like these magnificent rims with ultra-thin spokes, this tank with finely cut edges, this full digital dashboard, this so desirable slenderness…. Oh sure, it all comes at a price. And Agusta now pulls down her last card, the one that will capsize desire in another dimension. 12,000, 13,000? No, between 9 and 10,000 euros. Not bad. It will therefore face the 675 Street Triple R with almost the same price, and will evolve at 1000 euros above the Japanese armada..
To arrive at this extraordinarily affordable price for an MV-Agusta, the factory has overlooked a few items with a prestigious scent. The brake calipers are not monobloc, no blinkers integrated in the mirrors, almost unadjustable suspensions (only the preload of the shock absorber is), sports tires but not rare, and some parts are made in China.
But in the sensation and temptation category, the 675 Brutale is a winner in many ways..
