Presentation of the WRM 450 Supermoto

WRM 450 Supermoto for the first time at Motocross World Championship

MOTORRAD predicts: At the Motocross World Championship kick-off on April 1st in Valkenswaard, Holland, this motorcycle will overtake all factory machines – at least as far as the attention in the paddock is concerned. Because after the WRM 450 has been causing big eyes at trade fairs for over a year, things are getting serious this season. Both in the Supermoto World Championship and under works rider Christian Beggi in the MX1 Motocross World Championship, it should prove that spectacular technology is not an end in itself.

For the builder, the Italian Balestra brothers, the extraordinary appearance is only a logical consequence. After all, her company WR Compositi near Bergamo has been producing high-quality carbon bicycle frames for years. Carbon fiber is logically the main element of the WRM in the literal sense. The heart of the chassis are two Y-shaped frame spines made from black fibers. The aluminum frame flanks as well as the steering head assembly, which is adjustable in inclination, are screwed into its arms. Thanks to the length-adjustable connection, the steering head angle can be varied by four degrees. Spectacular, even if you know that such basic chassis data is hardly changed in practice.

Full of carbon also defines the periphery of the WRM. Tank, side panels, air filter box and even the carbon fiber cylinder head cover save a lot of pounds. Another novelty in off-road sport is the rear swing arm, which – apart from the aluminum mountings for the rear wheel axle, deflection and swing arm axle – is made of carbon. If the official weight of 101 kilograms is correct, the WRM is four kilograms below the current 450 crossers, all weighing 105 kilograms.

When it comes to engines, the enthusiastic Italians go more conventional ways. The in-house 450 single, with its Unicam valve control, four titanium valves and a bore-to-stroke ratio of 96 by 62.1 millimeters, clearly borrows from the Honda CRF 450 R..

L.Ultimately, the extremely expensive spring elements from the South Tyrolean luxury forge Solva complete the WRM, the extravagance of which also has a financial impact. Signori Balestra advises 24,000 euros for the series models. That’s supposed to be at the end of 2007, a few months earlier with a driving appointment for MOTORRAD.
