Yamaha Tracer 9 and Tracer 9 GT 2021
More power, cornering ABS and cruise control
The Yamaha Tracer 900 is now called Tracer 9 and it really lets it down with its model update for 2021. To do this, she confidently reaches into the R1 parts shelf. The Tracer 9 GT is even more luxuriously equipped.
The Yamaha Tracer 9 is self-confident, because in Germany it is the fourth most popular Yamaha after the MT-07, Tenere 700 and MT-09 (as of October 2020; source: KBA). Previously it was known as the Tracer 900. For the 2021 model year, Yamaha is now making the sports tourer fit for Euro 5. The bore of the three-cylinder is increased by three millimeters, as in the MT-09, which is why the Tracer 9 now has 890 cm³ instead of the previous 847 cm³. And so it also increases in power: 119 hp at 10,000 / min (previously 115 hp) and a maximum torque of 93 Nm at 7,000 / min (previously 88 Nm at 8,500 / min). In addition, the completely redesigned three-cylinder weighs 1.7 kilos less than its predecessor.
Less weight, more payload
The exhaust system has also become lighter, and with its newly designed stainless steel manifolds has lost 1.4 kilos in weight. And something has also become lighter: the ten-spoke wheels including axles report a weight saving of 700 grams. Overall, the new 2021 Yamaha Tracer 9 rolls around two kilos lighter than its predecessor – now 212 instead of 214 kilograms. Fortunately, the permitted payload has increased from 176 to 193 kilos.
The position of the engine was also fine-tuned. In the new and more compact aluminum frame, which was derived from the 2021 MT, the three-cylinder is mounted more upright than its predecessor, which should ensure a better sense of balance and more grip on the front wheel. The rear of the Yamaha Tracer 9 2021 has also changed: a new swing arm that is 60 millimeters longer is now mounted on the inside of the frame and ensures that it remains at a wheelbase of 1,500 millimeters despite the more compact frame.
Assistance systems Tracer 9 (2021)
Several sensors of the six-axis measuring unit send their data to the control unit, which then decides whether and how traction control, slide control and wheelie control intervene. For these functions, the Tracer 9 used the R1 on the high-tech shelf. The little helpers intervene late or cautiously early on request, but can also be individually adjusted, whereby slide and wheelie control can be completely switched off. It is also equipped with ABS cornering and shows off two TFT screens in the cockpit. This should also clearly show which of the four driving modes the driver is in. Mode 1 stands for sporty, mode 2 should be the all-rounder, mode 3 should be gentle and mode 4 is designed for driving in the rain.
The Yamaha Tracer 9 also claws the radial Nissin brake cylinder for the front brake from the R1.
With cruise control as standard
In the 2021 model year, the Yamaha Tracer 9 will be equipped with cruise control as standard. It can be activated from 50 km / h and from 4th gear and switches off automatically as soon as the brake, clutch or accelerator is activated.
Individual seat position settings
In the basic setting, the seat height is 15 millimeters lower than on the previous model, which brings us to 835 millimeters (previously 850 mm). The seat can be adjusted in two positions using the height adjuster, the footrests can be moved 15 millimeters up or down and by turning the handlebar clamps, the handlebars can be adjusted nine millimeters forwards and four millimeters upwards. The windshield of the Yamaha Tracer 9 is growing for the 2021 model year and can be adjusted in ten positions.
Other changes concern the fully adjustable 41 mm telescopic fork, which is 30 millimeters shorter, the new mount for the adjustable shock absorber, the Battlax T32 developed with Bridgestone for the Tracer 9 (120/70 ZR 17 front, 180/55 ZR 17 rear ), the slightly increased transmission ratio of the first and second gears, the new material for the clutch discs, which are now exposed to higher torque, and the change in the fuel supply. For the last point, the injection nozzles were attached to the sides of the throttle valves, which should increase the efficiency of the new Yamaha Tracer 9 by nine percent and thus provide more range.
Colors, prices, market launch
The Yamaha Tracer 9 will be available in Europe from March 2021 in the following colors: "Redline" (Red and "Tech Kamo" (green-gray shade). The sports tourer costs 11,599 euros, including the ancillary costs of 400 euros.
Yamaha Tracer 9 GT 2021
The lavishly equipped GT version will also be available from March. It costs 13,999 euros and is 2,400 euros above the Tracer 9. In addition to red and green-gray, there is not only the icon paint of the R1M to choose from, but also the hard-shell side case, the electronic semi-active KYB chassis with two driving modes (Sport and comfort), the Quickshifter for upshifting and downshifting without a clutch, cornering lights as well as handle heating that can be regulated in ten stages.
