The star of the KTM stand at the Milan Motorcycle Show is the Super Duke GT, a semi-faired version of the Super Duke R roadster and seen at the. Described as "the avant-garde interpretation of a sports bike made for long journeys", this 2016 novelty offers a breathtaking level of sophistication and performance (173 hp!), Coupled with a promising versatility.
Fighter jet engine, burst electronics, A380 comfort ?
As noted, the Super Duke GT is built from the same engine and chassis base as the winner of our Super Duke R. The impressive 1,301 cc (1.3-liter!) V-twin is transferred almost as-is under the GT’s redesigned saddle and semi-fairing, which also includes a height-adjustable windshield.
The LC8 of the Super Duke GT delivers the same – impressive – power of 173 hp as on the, whose number of horses fell by 7 hp in 2016, no doubt due to its upgrade to Euro 4 standards (Read our Presentation of the 1290 Super Duke R Special Edition 2016). The torque value is identical (144 Nm), but obtained a bit earlier: at 6750 rpm on the GT against 7750 on the R.
Heavily compressed (13.2: 1), this block with enormous 108mm diameter pistons (71mm stroke) is controlled by a ride-by-wire accelerator. Its temperament can be modulated through several driving modes, which will also affect the sensitivity of the traction control and the ABS installed as standard..
As on trails and, this Bosch ABS is also connected to the angle sensors, which allows it to adapt its action to the inclination of the motorcycle and thus avoid losing the front by titillating too strongly the Brembo calipers. 4-piston monobloc radial mounted in full curve !
The chrome molybdenum reinforced tubular trellis chassis is also closely derived from the Super Duke R roadster, with the main exception being that the aluminum rear buckle is lengthened to accommodate a larger passenger seat finished with a grab handle, as well as brackets. suitcases (optional luggage storage).
The WP suspensions offer the same travel of 125 mm at the front and 156 mm at the rear, relatively high values at the origin of the excellent absorption capacity on the roadster. Enough to reinforce the announced versatility of the Super Duke GT and allow it to compete with GT-roadsters like the Z1000SX as well as sports-trails like the S1000XR.
The inverted 48 mm fork and the monoshock of the GT differ from the "R" by their use of the semi-active technology released on the 1190 Adventure and then the 1290 Adventure. Informed by sagging sensors and accelerometers, these suspensions can be configured from the handlebars in terms of their preload and their calibration. Their hydraulic laws then vary in real time depending on the condition of the road and the driving phases..
This sophisticated damping is coupled with a particularly advanced and flattering standard equipment, such as the cruise control, the tire pressure indicator, heated grips or LED "cornering" headlights (). In addition, the Super Duke GT is the first KTM to receive as standard a shifter allowing to go up the gears without disengaging or cutting the throttle..
Its 17-inch rims – fitted with the very good Pirelli Angel GTs – have the same dimensions as on the R, 120 mm wide at the front and 190 mm at the rear. On the other hand, the volume of its tank increases significantly to adapt to its new road motorcycle functions, and goes from 18 to 23 liters.
This increase as well as its fairings and additional equipment logically lead to a weight gain, of just over 15 kg compared to the Super Duke R: the Super Duke GT is announced at "228 kg full and equipment included" , specify the Austrians.
Its price and availability have not yet been communicated, but it seems reasonable to count on a price close to or even higher than € 18,000 as the Super Duke R roadster is currently trading for € 15,995..
