Royal Enfield doubles the stakes with its new 650 cc twin
Royal Enfield is exhibiting at EICMA in Milan its first two-cylinder engine (since the brand’s revival), a 648 cc block set at 270 ° air-oil cooled which equips the new Interceptor and Continental GT 650 of the Indian manufacturer. Presentation.
The arrival of this new twin – a real revolution for Royal Enfield since it flew the Indian flag with its venerable single cylinders – does not come as a surprise as prototypes have near the brand’s R&D center in Leicestershire (England). Cooled by air-oil, this vertical twin remains faithful to the house culture: proven and reliable solutions which relegate performance to the background.

This new 270 ° stalled engine adopts a single camshaft distribution for its 8 valves, while its compression ratio is contained at 9.5: 1. Its power of 47 hp at 7100 rpm and its torque of 52 Nm at 4000 rpm suggest a strong will and a preference for low revs. Its bore and stroke dimensions are 78 mm and 67.8 mm.
The gearbox has six gears, while a balance shaft contains the vibrations and the exhaust goes through two outlets that would let out a sound similar to the brand’s mono….
This 650 cc block also receives an injection, an essential criterion for leaving its borders in the direction of Europe. A "Slip Assist" limited-slip clutch is also featured, for the very first time on a Royal Enfield.
The Indian manufacturer specifies that its new engine is "a global platform" which will serve to propel future generations of motorcycles: "it has the potential to energize and extend the segment of the medium-capacity motorcycle", specifies Royal Enfield, who intently hears " dominate "the motorcycle segment" from 250 to 750 cc internationally " !
Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650
At the EICMA show in Milan (Italy), Royal Enfield presented its engine in two different motorcycles: the Interceptor 650 – a nod to its first motorcycle produced for the American market – and the Continental GT 650, a Cafe Racer variant close to the . These two new 2018 models share a double steel cradle frame designed by the British Harris, .
The suspensions – telescopic fork and double shock absorber with separate cylinder – are identical on both bikes, as are the flat seat with raised backrest and spoke rims. Same sharing of parts for the classic round headlight and needle instrumentation – with small LCD screen on the bottom – or the front and rear single disc brakes. ByBre calipers (Indian subsidiary of Brembo) are supported by a standard ABS.
The main differences between the two motorcycles affect the look and ergonomics: the Continental GT 650 (below) notably adopts straps fixed lower and more closed than the wide handlebars of the Interceptor (above). The position of the footrests is also different, further back on the GT.
"The new 650 cc twin cylinders are attractive both to the large customer base in India and to customers in other developing markets, South East Asia and Latin America," says Rudratej Singh, President of Royal proudly. Enfield. "They will also be an inspiring option for customers in more mature markets such as Europe, Australia and North America".
"For Royal Enfield, this double launch marks the beginning of a new era", continues the big boss of the Indian brand, which is openly eyeing outside its huge domestic market, as the launch in 2016 of the trail proved in particular, now Euro4 approved and equipped with ABS to climb to the top of the European market !
