Oil traps in the Eifel – Update from November 20, 2014
The offender must be permanently in psychiatry
Deliberate, insidious, potentially fatal: before Easter, the police discovered oil traps in the Aachen area. A motorcyclist was seriously injured and the alleged perpetrator was caught.

Update from November 20, 2014:
Not culpable! But: the perpetrator is considered a danger to the general public and has to be permanently in psychiatry. Ex-girlfriend is a policewoman
The Aachen Regional Court has now classified the person who caused the Eifel oil traces from the beginning of April in the process as not at fault. However, the judge came to the conclusion that the defendant Thomas K. should be classified as dangerous to the public due to his state of mind and ordered permanent detention in the psychiatry. The court followed both the medical report of a psychiatrist and the application of the Aachen public prosecutor’s office. During the trial, the perpetrator confessed extensively.
As a motive, the 26-year-old stated that he had felt bullied by his ex-girlfriend, a police officer. For example, the woman followed him in the patrol car or observed him during police checks from the patrol car. He wanted to attract attention with both the traces of oil and the swastika graffiti. Thomas K. stated that he was neither right-wing extremist nor did he hate motorcyclists.
The court-ordered placement can last for life. According to the law, however, it must be checked annually whether the reason for this still exists. According to this, Thomas K. cannot be released from psychiatry until 2015 at the earliest.
Update from April 14, 2014
Almost exactly three years after the fatal attack on Josef Deniffel from Allgau, who slipped into an oncoming car on a deliberately laid oil trail, the horror is now repeated in the northern Eifel. South of Aachen, a perpetrator had laid a total of five traces of oil in two nights. Four on country roads, one on a federal road.
The Aachen police assume that the act is “aimed specifically against motorcyclists”, according to a press release. All oil traps were located in curves and on routes into the Eifel, which is popular with motorcyclists. One of them was the undoing of a 47-year-old Yamaha rider: the XJR rider fell on the L12 road south of Stolberg in the Rhineland between the towns of Venwegen and Mulartshutte. In a shady curve the 1200 slipped away on the oil. The driver was seriously injured and was taken to hospital by the ambulance.
Suspect on April 17th arrested
For clues that lead to clarification, a reward of 1000 euros is offered.
A suspect was arrested on Maundy Thursday after two witnesses suspected independently of one another that the 26-year-old could be connected to the offenses. However, the Aachen public prosecutor Jost Schutzeberg does not see a direct connection with the glass bottles full of used oil from southern Germany, which were shattered in 2011. On the contrary, the man had made a confused impression and was placed in a psychiatric facility on the basis of a psychological report. He confessed to the oil attacks and other swastika graffiti.
News from April 10, 2014
Motorcyclists all over North Rhine-Westphalia are alarmed: Apparently an assassin is targeting them. Similar to 2011 in the Allgau, one or more perpetrators south of Aachen laid a total of five traces of oil over two nights last weekend. Four on country roads, one on a federal road. The Aachen police assume that the act is “aimed specifically against motorcyclists”, according to a press release. Reason: The oil traps appeared at night, all in the curve area and on routes into the Eifel, which is particularly popular with motorcyclists.
On the morning of April 4th, one of these traces of oil was the undoing of a 47-year-old Yamaha rider: The XJR rider fell on the L12 road south of Stolberg near Aachen between the towns of Venwegen and Mulartshutte. The 1200er slipped away in a curve on the oil, slid and remained at the edge of the forest next to the road. According to the police, the driver was seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital by the emergency doctor.
Street was supposedly already cleaned
The piquant thing about the accident: the 25-meter-long oil trail was discovered by a driver during the night. As a result, the fire brigade and police blocked the highway. A specialist company had cleaned the tar and declared the work over in the morning. The accident happened only afterwards. “There was obviously a misunderstanding here,” said the Aachner prosecutor Jost Schutzeberg when asked by motorradonline.de. “The police had not yet cleared the route, the oil may have formed a dangerous film again because of the unusually warm temperatures that day.” The fallen Yamaha rider has meanwhile been released from the hospital.
Special commission determined
In the first police reports it was said that the traps had been set with thin hydraulic oil. The police also found a suitable canister. “The oil is currently being investigated by forensic technology,” explains public prosecutor Schutzeberg. He did not want to confirm that it was actually hydraulic oil.
Prosecutor Schutzeberg does not see a direct connection with the oil traps from southern Germany, to which the Allgau Honda driver Josef Deniffel fell victim at Easter 2011. But the cases are the same: As in the Allgau, where the perpetrator has not yet been caught, the Aachen public prosecutor’s office is also investigating attempted murder. And as in the Allgau, a special police commission was formed. For clues that lead to clarification, a reward of 1000 euros is offered, see appeal.
