Good light is an important safety factor for many motorcyclists. It’s about being seen as well as seeing. Many old bikes are still on the road with H4 lamps, many younger ones are already equipped with H7 headlights. Only the youngest generation of motorcycles is using really bright LED headlights.

Conversion kits from halogen to LED light have been available on the open market for some time – but none of them have been approved so far. If such LED lighting is retrofitted, the vehicle’s operating license expires.

Lighting specialist Osram has now succeeded in obtaining road approval from the Federal Motor Transport Authority for the retrofit kit Osram Night Breaker LED for H7 base after a test by TuV Sud. Retrofitting the LED lights in halogen headlights is therefore legal and compliant with the law.

Osram states that the Night Breaker LED lamps shine up to three times brighter than the minimum legal requirement, achieve a long range and high contrasts. In addition, the durability is five times longer than that of a normal halogen lamp, and the power consumption is lower. The Osram Night Breaker LED retrofit lamps are specified with 19 watts. The kit costs around 130 euros for cars.

Approvals so far only for cars

So everything is great? Unfortunately, no. The conversion requires a specific approval for each vehicle. This general type approval (ABG) of the Federal Motor Transport Authority, which is only valid for vehicles registered in Germany but EU-wide, is currently only available for 17 model series from eight automobile manufacturers. Osram is working on further approvals for other models and will be the list continuously expand accordingly.

LED conversion for motorcycles

Approvals for LED retrofitting of motorcycles are theoretically possible, explains Osram when asked by MOTORRAD. Osram is currently examining all options for expanding the existing portfolio. However, the company cannot yet provide any concrete planning.

Conclusion

Better light than a legal retrofit solution – sounds great. And the price also stays within reasonable limits. One can only hope that Osram will approve as many vehicles as possible – including motorcycles in particular – as quickly as possible.
