Presentation of the BMW R 1200 ST
Habitable aroma
It certainly does not correspond to the popular idea of beautiful. Nevertheless, the new BMW R 1200 ST could make its way. She has the technical tools to do this.
You get used to everything, even
to the dative! «A physics teacher known to the author conveyed this wisdom with a smile and a conviction to his students. At that time, of course, no one could have foreseen the ideas of later BMW designers.
In fact, what the new seems
R. 1200 ST presented as her face, at first sight it takes more than just getting used to. Far away from all even proportions, a powerful one dominates,
vertically arranged double headlights
the angular ST front and is reminiscent of the
one-eyed, man-eating giant who wanted the legendary Odysseus on his wandering around the collar.
No question about it, there is something Cyclops about the ST. But: Didn’t the R 1100 GS from 1994 remind many motorcycle fans of a platypus, was it scorned and ridiculed? And what happened? It became a bestseller. Just like all of their successors up to the R 1200 GS of today, which for
stand-alone motorcycle design.
And for convincing technical ones
Solutions. The youngest member of the boxer family can also come up with this. For example, on the two-part main and rear frame made of tubular steel, which is largely based on the dimensions of the also new RT (see driving report from page 12) and is not only light but also rigid. With a full tank of fuel, the Bavarians promise 229 kilograms for the new sports tourer, a very good value by BMW standards. Which is also enhanced by the fact that the boxer in comparison
for the GS once again clearly increased in performance. Reinforced by ten to 110 hp
the still air-cooled unit,
which are now applied at 7500 revolutions (GS: 7000 / min).
But there is a downside. The high-compression double-ignition four-valve engine (twelve to one) is on high-
octane super plus designed while
conventional super is digested thanks to knock control, but cannot release full power. The promised 3.5 seconds from zero to 100 km / h should also be possible with 95-octane fuel, as well as the top speed of over 200 km / h specified by the Munich-based company.
It goes without saying that, in addition to the in-house wheel control systems Telelever and Paralever, BMW also includes the WAD shock absorber, which was first introduced in the GS and in which the damping increases progressively depending on the spring deflection. In addition, the Teilinte is available on request (1050 euros)-
grale ABS available, the suspension that can be adjusted at the push of a button (ESA) is reserved for the RT sister.
In terms of ergonomic adjustment options, the new ST is hardly inferior to the tourer models. The handlebar halves can be adjusted in height by over 25 millimeters, and the windshield can be changed mechanically in three stages by 20 millimeters each. This is matched by the variable seat, which is manually located in the driver’s area
can be adjusted in two heights. In the standard trim, with which various color combinations can be selected, the RT costs 12,500 euros. With ingredients from the extensive range of BMW accessories, everyone can put together their own personal R 1200 ST. If you are ideally equipped, it should be easier to get used to it.
