Of course, there is only one thing that can realistically test whether the jeans clothes really hold up: a fall. Since no editor was willing to drop off the motorcycle over a dozen times, a dummy was used.

Special motorcycle denim jackets in comparison

Jeans on a motorcycle – that’s casual, that’s easy. But what happens in the event of involuntary asphalt contact? Can you get away with a few bruises then? 13 trousers and five jackets made a flight for MOTORRAD.

Thorsten Dentges

06/10/2010

Poor Svenni. At 80 km / h it knocks him off the motorcycle, his knees hit hard, thump, he tries in vain to support himself, then slams the helmet visor on the asphalt, drags on his stomach a few meters, is thrown to the side, shreds fly, and only after sliding more than 25 meters does it remain motionless in a cloud of fluff and dust. The helpers come running and turn the casualty onto his back. Svenni has a tough job that nobody else wants to do. He is of indefinite age, around 1.75 meters tall, weighs 90 kilograms, and is more of a silent guy. Svenni is a crash test dummy. A loan from Dekra and very valuable for the big MOTORRAD jeans test, because Svenni can fall until he drops. Normal, lively test drivers naturally try to avoid this. And trips under the southern French sun to check fit and comfort are a piece of cake compared to Svennis. Just like the everyday evaluation of textiles.

In the end, however, this is primarily of interest: How much safety does the clothes offer in the event of a fall? And without crash test Svenni, who was catapulted towards the asphalt by a motorcycle drop device developed by the ADAC (see photo show), this question could hardly be answered. But back to the beginning. Why this test? The topic is not just within the editorial team “Jeans on the motorcycle” controversial. You are only too happy to leave your entire equipment behind and slip into it “my old jeans”, to cruise into the city or to the quarry pond. Keyword cruiser: Certain types generally reject technical motorcycle clothing as unfashionable and therefore turn blue when it comes to safety equipment. However, the outfitters now offer a variety of special motorcycle jeans with protectors (or retrofit options) and reinforcements using Kevlar (aramid) as a better choice than conventional fashion jeans. The most expensive pants in the test, Esquad Strong, cost almost 400 euros including protectors.

The hanger with a folding mechanism is a special construction of the ADAC. The dummy was thrown off at 80 km / h.

A proud sum, especially since the cheapest, Icon Victory, only a fraction of this price expensive, also wants to play in the league of motorcycle clothing, even if at first glance it can hardly be distinguished from normal jeans. There were also big differences in the jackets presented – and not just in terms of price. So the buyer has to distinguish and decide. Therefore this test, which in addition to the safety aspect should also clarify other questions: How do you go on tour with the blue fabric, how easy is the garment to handle? Do the protectors disturb when shopping or strolling through the old town, or do you even work up a sweat in summer due to the duplication of materials? Incidentally, the coolness factor was deliberately left out of the evaluation, because whether a cut is considered a “baggy” or “slim fit”, the ablution as “vintage” or “raw” like, should remain a matter of taste.

The processing, in turn, is considered a tough test criterion and influences the overall grade. Again to the drop test (see individual results for the products): It provided important information about protection in the event of a fall, but cannot provide any ultimate truth. Although the drops were always made from 80 km / h at the same point, the dummy fell and slid a little differently each time. This was taken into account accordingly when assessing the abrasion pattern and the degree of destruction. Just like the seat of the protectors, which had already been put to the test in the driving tests. Florian Schueler, accident analyst from Heidelberg University, emphasizes precisely this aspect: “Are there protectors and do they stay where they belong in the event of a fall? If this is not the case, the most important protective function is missing.”

Only the lederhosen were relatively unimpressed by the fall: Slight traces of abrasion and a torn seam.

The researcher explains why. So-called abrasion injuries, in German: abrasions, are very uncomfortable, but rarely life-threatening like the many injuries that result from hitting edges, posts or rocks. And only tested protectors – mind you: well-fitting ones – would offer the best protection in this horror scenario. However, abrasions are not entirely without it. Depending on the nature of the asphalt (rough, smooth, gravel, etc.) and the affected parts of the body, a slide of several meters can first affect the skin, then muscles and tissue and even arteries and veins.

In extreme cases, there is a risk of severe blood loss and even bones can be abraded. Not exactly tasty. And as a result of the accident, complications in healing are possible, although rarely, such as a gas fire, a serious wound infection. Certain bacteria of the genus Clostridium form poisons (toxins), which cause tissue to die off combined with the formation of gas. The toxins wash out with the bloodstream – a life-threatening situation can arise within a few hours. Accident researcher Schueler therefore warns: “Riding in normal jeans is like being naked. The material is through immediately.” The fashion jeans for 19.90 euros, which were badly torn up after the MOTORRAD drop test, prove Schueler to be right.

However, to draw the conclusion from this that jeans are fundamentally bad and that normal motorcycle clothing protects you from a literally bad abrasion would be wrong. The test showed that single-layer motorcycle textile trousers made from abrasion-resistant Cordura (polyamide) achieved a catastrophic result (see page 107), and even a slightly grayed leather suit did not necessarily look better than most of the jeans jackets tested after being thrown off -pants. Some of the jeans, on the other hand, made a lively impression after the crash test and were still considered trendy Buxe with a subtle hole design.

When testing the cheap fashion jeans for 19.90 euros, you shouldn’t expect any fall protection.

Hans-Peter Fleischmann from the Hohenstein Institute in Bonnigheim (textile research facility) is hardly surprised: “Jeans were originally worn as work clothing, so they naturally have to be able to withstand a lot.” Jeans, more precisely: denim fabrics (from “Serge de Nîmes”, Fabrics from the French city of Nîmes) consist of a so-called twill fabric, which is particularly strong. They get their good durability through the use of heavy yarns. “That’s a lot of material”, explains the clothing expert, but points out that the quality does not only depend on the weight of the fabric (measured in ounces), but also largely on the quality of the cotton. Fleischmann: “The longer the fibers, the better the yarns can be made. The problem: you can hardly see it with the naked eye.”

The test also showed that double layers of material play a decisive role in abrasion. Summary: Solid, thick denim fabrics, with good workmanship, withstand even rough falls comparatively well. During a slide phase from around 100 km / h, friction heat can cause the clothing to reach a temperature of over 200 degrees Celsius at certain points, at which point synthetic fibers made of polyamide and polyester melt to form residues that burn into the skin. Cotton fibers, on the other hand, coagulate like flaring paper – they dissolve, as it were, into air – and the aramid fibers, which are ideally underlaid, only char at around 400 degrees.

In an emergency, the injuries would be less than with many similarly priced textile motorcycle suits without additional Kevlar protection. However, motorcycle denim clothing cannot replace a tight-fitting, high-quality leather suit. And high-end textile suits that are cut close to the body with many adjustment options, double layers of material and very abrasion-resistant fabrics such as Cordura 1000 or Schoeller dynatec or leather trimmings are used by the “Overalls” probably not trumped either. Motorcycle jeans and jackets are and will remain a compromise. A pretty good one, especially in summer, because you are not sweaty and overheated on the road – this is certainly good for the driver’s active safety. By the way, despite all the physical effort, Svenni was put back into the box safe and sound for his circumstances. After more than 20 ground contact on hard airfield asphalt, only a few scratches remained. Needless to say, even wearing the best motorcycle jeans, it is better to leave such sledding games to professionals with replaceable rubber skin.

Conclusion of the jacket test:
When it comes to jackets, the versatile, extremely airy Lindstrands wins the crown – absolutely suitable for midsummer! the Vanucci As with pants, scores with a very good price-performance ratio that is worth imitating.

Gerd Mayer, 35, graphic artist and inner city scooter pilot: “Motorcycle clothing is annoying in the city”

Jeans and motorized two-wheelers? I say: of course! Of course, you have to have a helmet and good motorcycle gloves. Otherwise, I wear normal, sturdy shoes, a weatherproof jacket and, without hesitation, jeans, preferably without annoying protectors. With this and the rain suit in the helmet compartment, I feel adequately equipped for all the demands of my personal everyday life on two wheels. I can stand by it because I only travel at low speeds in the city. I consider complete motorcycle equipment to be absolutely oversized.

Markus Biebricher, 47, travel editor and tropical fanatic: “Okay for special missions”

When traveling, I usually use textile suits with a membrane, and more rarely a touring skin made of leather. But there are tours where one pair of pants should be enough for everything, because you have to travel with extremely little luggage. I was recently in Vietnam with a rental motorcycle: almost 100 percent humidity, burning sun, dusty gravel roads. My protector jeans worked perfectly there and also looked good in the restaurant in the evening. I think special motorcycle jeans are a really good alternative.

Gert Thole, 54, test boss and part-time flatland cruiser: “Better not to fall”

I confess: I like to ride my motorcycle in jeans, and I often do so. It’s practical, convenient, and cool. For example, when I take the not-too-long commute to work in the summer. Or when I take the cruiser for a leisurely stroll across the country on Sunday morning. But I also have to admit: I wouldn’t like to fall with jeans. That’s why I prefer to wear a complete suit when I’m out with more sporty machines or for testing, because there is an increased risk of falling. So far this separation has worked – mostly.

Sigi Scherm, 51, driving trainer and hobby ice hockey player: “The right equipment for every sport”

For hockey games I choose full gear with protectors and a helmet, just as I want to wear the best protective clothing on the motorcycle. Jeans are certainly not one of them, protectors and Kevlar reinforcements or not. Most of the time you can’t even pair such pants and jackets – I think that’s absurd! In our training, we place the highest safety demands on clothing, and even when falling from low speeds it has been shown that this is also necessary in order to avoid injuries as much as possible.

Shuffling into the street cafe for a cappuccino, window shopping in the city. This is what a nice day in the life of a product tester can look like – as long as he does all things in motorcycle jeans dress and his impressions (on skin climate, accessibility and size of pockets, etc.) are meticulous for the evaluation area “Practice: walking” logged. For the area “Practice: driving” we went to the Côte d’Azur before the beginning of spring. In addition to the fit and wearing comfort, the seat of the protectors as well as the suitability for touring at brisk country road speeds were put to the test – with plenty of sun, but a maximum of 18 degrees Celsius. The testers then assessed the quality and workmanship of the fabrics and seams somewhat frozen. The crash test on the airfield in Neuhausen ob Eck, a cordoned-off test site, really got down to the nitty-gritty to check out trousers and jackets in terms of safety. Ruprecht Muller, engineer at the ADAC technology center in Landsberg am Lech, has specially developed a trailer with a release mechanism for such purposes. A permanently installed scrap motorcycle can be tilted using a cable pull so that a fall is simulated at the defined dropping point. A hybrid 3 dummy made available by the Dekra Crashtest Center in Neumunster, dressed with one of the test samples in the appropriate clothing size for each run, sat on the motorcycle and was thrown onto the asphalt of the airfield at 80 km / h.

IXS Sheridan

Product test: motorcycle denim jackets

mps photo studio

IXS Sheridan

providers: IXS, phone 07631/18040 www.ixs.de
price: 219.90 euros *
To dye: Blue
Sizes: S to 3XL (women: DS to DXL)

Practice driving:
The collar is cut very tight. If you wear a neck warmer underneath, even if it is only thinly applied, the collar can no longer be closed properly. There is only an airy mesh lining underneath the denim outer material – the insulation is not sufficient for temperatures below 20 degrees at high speed on country roads. The protectors sit well in the driving position.

Practice walking:
The classically cut denim jacket does not stand out as a motorcycle jacket in the pedestrian zone, and small niceties such as a cell phone compartment or easily accessible and securely closable pockets (press studs and zippers) contribute to everyday use. The wearing comfort is average.

Security:
Top-fitting CE protectors, a compartment for a back protector and aramid reinforcements in the fall zones bring many plus points in addition to the good crash test result (rubber skin intact).

Processing / equipment:
Impeccable workmanship and decent equipment are good, an additional inner jacket would be even better for the price.

Conclusion:
Summertime-Blue – the comparatively tight-fitting blue from Switzerland is great for casual cruising in blazing sun. However, it is too simple for the brisk tour. From a fashion perspective, old school – personable!

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Lindstrands Dundee

providers: Jofama, phone 0561/470835 www.jofama.se
price: 219.00 euros *
To dye: Blue
Sizes: XS to 3XL

Practice driving:
Formidable cut – close to the body and still comfortable. In addition, well thought-out width adjustments and a concept suitable for high summer with a removable, windbreaking hooded vest that covers the large, efficient mesh fabric, which is efficiently permeable to wind, when the sun does not heat up enough. A bit annoying: the hood straps drum against the helmet.

Practice walking:
Good ventilation, high wearing comfort, even if the jacket is a bit heavy compared to the more classic denim jackets. Well-arranged pockets increase the practicality.

Security:
An almost 20 centimeter long crack on the elbow, several holes in the denim, the Cordura inserts and the reinforcing hi-art material doubles. However, the good fit of the thick-walled CE protectors saved the dummy’s skin and bones after it was dropped. Back protector can be retrofitted, jacket can be attached.

Processing / equipment:
The material and equipment mix is cleverly arranged and well processed.

Conclusion:
The smart, modern Swede scores with her versatility at the very front. The extreme ventilation options combined with a clever inner vest bring enormous advantages in midsummer. A great overall package.

MOTORRAD verdict: very good

Mottowear civil

Product test: motorcycle denim jackets

Mottowear civil

providers: Core Industries, phone 0234/79621381, www.coreindustries.de
price: 249.00 euros *
To dye: Blue
Sizes: S to XL

Practice driving:

The shoulder protectors, only attached with Velcro strips, slip easily when put on, and they do not fit ideally when driving. Overall, the cut is not particularly successful. From 80 km / h, the much too wide collar whistles powerfully, you can’t even get into the too narrow sleeves with a thick sweater. The denim is a bit limp and starts to flutter at high speed on the country road. Weak performance.

Practice walking:
If you get rid of the protectors, the jacket sits loosely and casually for a stroll through town. Five zippered, not particularly accessible pockets and an open cell phone compartment (unsuitable) are only mediocre.

Security:
Due to the full set of CE protectors (shoulders, elbows, back) and at least some aramid reinforcement on the elbows, the mottowear survived the crash test reasonably well. However, the slide phase was rather short.

Processing / equipment:
At this price you could expect better features and workmanship.

Conclusion:
The most expensive jacket in the test had the worst result. Motorcycling is not really fun with jeans from Poland due to imperfections in fit and loss of comfort.

MOTORRAD verdict: Satisfactory

* including CE protectors as in the test sample

Polo Drive Nevada

Product test: motorcycle denim jackets

Polo Drive Nevada

providers: Polo, phone 02165/8440200, www.polo-motorrad.de
price: 109.95 euros *
To dye: Black
Sizes: M to XXL

Practice driving:
The jacket counterpart to the Nevada pants doesn’t look bad on the upper body. The membrane keeps the wind well off and protects to some extent from cooling down despite the thin material. It is better to plan longer tours with it for the summer. Comfort and fit are good.

Practice walking:
In midsummer temperatures, the membrane quickly runs out of breath, so it is better to wear the jacket thrown over your arm so as not to sweat. But below 20 degrees the Nevada is a good companion for excursions on foot – especially if it should rain.

Security:
The protectors can easily slip on the shoulders. After being thrown, after a short slide, smaller holes (with fusions of synthetic fibers) appeared on the sleeves and two seams tore. Good: Retrofit option for a back protector.

Processing / equipment:
The jacket doesn’t look particularly solid, but the equipment with membrane and proper CE protectors brings plus points.

Conclusion:
A sensational price. But there is a really decent summer jacket with reasonably adequate protection against wind and weather, which at least offers a minimum of safety through the protector equipment.

MOTORRAD verdict: good

Vanucci Estivo

Vanucci Estivo

providers: Louis, phone 040/73419360 www.louis.de
price: 159.95 euros *
To dye: Blue
Sizes: 46 to 62 (women: 34 to 46)

Practice driving:
The harmonious cut immediately appeals to you, and the protectors on the shoulders and elbows sit well and comfortably. The tied-in hooded jacket made of thin microfleece is reasonably warm when the sun doesn’t show up. Good summer jacket.

Practice walking:
Four large outer pockets, which can be closed with buttons or zippers, as well as two pockets and a cell phone compartment in the inner jacket offer storage space that is fully suitable for everyday use. Inner and outer jackets are equally suitable for a stroll through town or a trip to the nightlife.

Security:
The mixed aramid fabric as additional protection was only used sparingly (only under the protectors). Small holes in the denim during the crash test; the best protection was provided by the well-fitting protectors.

Processing / equipment:
The denim jacket is acceptably processed in spite of the somewhat loveless seams, but savings were made on large-area reinforcements (see also item safety). A bit poor.

Conclusion:
The combination of a classic denim jacket, good protectors and a smart, practical hooded inner jacket is particularly popular on warm days. This package at this price is worth recommending.

MOTORRAD verdict: good
