Poor Svenni. At 80 km / h it knocks him off the motorcycle, his knees hit hard, thump, he tries in vain to support himself, then slams the helmet visor on the asphalt, drags on his stomach a few meters, is thrown to the side, shreds fly, and only after sliding more than 25 meters does it remain motionless in a cloud of fluff and dust. The helpers come running and turn the casualty onto his back. Svenni has a tough job that nobody else wants to do. He is of indefinite age, around 1.75 meters tall, weighs 90 kilograms, and is more of a silent guy. Svenni is a crash test dummy. In the end, however, this is primarily of interest: How much safety does the clothes offer in the event of a fall? And without crash test Svenni, who was catapulted towards the asphalt by a motorcycle drop device developed by the ADAC (see photo show), this question could hardly be answered. But back to the beginning. Why this test? The topic is not just within the editorial team “Jeans on the motorcycle” controversial. You are only too happy to leave your entire equipment behind and slip into it “my old jeans”, to cruise into the city or to the quarry pond. Keyword cruiser: Certain types generally reject technical motorcycle clothing as unfashionable and therefore turn blue when it comes to safety equipment. However, the outfitters now offer a variety of special motorcycle jeans with protectors (or retrofit options) and reinforcements using Kevlar (aramid) as a better choice than conventional fashion jeans. The most expensive pants in the test, Esquad Strong, cost almost 400 euros including protectors.

A proud sum, especially since the cheapest, Icon Victory, only a fraction of this price expensive, also wants to play in the league of motorcycle clothing, even if at first glance it can hardly be distinguished from normal jeans. There were also big differences in the jackets presented – and not just in terms of price. So the buyer has to distinguish and decide. Therefore this test, which in addition to the safety aspect should also clarify other questions: How do you go on tour with the blue fabric, how easy is the garment to handle? Do the protectors disturb when shopping or strolling through the old town, or do you even work up a sweat in summer due to the duplication of materials? Incidentally, the coolness factor was deliberately left out of the evaluation, because whether a cut is considered a “baggy” or “slim fit”, the ablution as “vintage” or “raw” like, should remain a matter of taste.

The processing, in turn, is considered a tough test criterion and influences the overall grade. Again to the drop test (see individual results for the products): It provided important information about protection in the event of a fall, but cannot provide any ultimate truth. Although the drops were always made from 80 km / h at the same point, the dummy fell and slid a little differently each time. This was taken into account accordingly when assessing the abrasion pattern and the degree of destruction. Just like the seat of the protectors, which had already been put to the test in the driving tests. Florian Schueler, accident analyst from Heidelberg University, emphasizes precisely this aspect: “Are there protectors and do they stay where they belong in the event of a fall? If this is not the case, the most important protective function is missing.”

The researcher explains why. So-called abrasion injuries, in German: abrasions, are very uncomfortable, but rarely life-threatening like the many injuries that result from hitting edges, posts or rocks. And only tested protectors – mind you: well-fitting ones – would offer the best protection in this horror scenario. However, abrasions are not entirely without it. Depending on the nature of the asphalt (rough, smooth, gravel, etc.) and the affected parts of the body, a slide of several meters can first affect the skin, then muscles and tissue and even arteries and veins.

In extreme cases, there is a risk of severe blood loss and even bones can be abraded. Not exactly tasty. And as a result of the accident, complications in healing are possible, although rarely, such as a gas fire, a serious wound infection. Certain bacteria of the genus Clostridium form poisons (toxins), which cause tissue to die off combined with the formation of gas. The toxins wash out with the bloodstream – a life-threatening situation can arise within a few hours. Accident researcher Schueler therefore warns: “Riding in normal jeans is like being naked. The material is through immediately.” The fashion jeans for 19.90 euros, which were badly torn up after the MOTORRAD drop test, prove Schueler to be right.

However, to draw the conclusion from this that jeans are fundamentally bad and that normal motorcycle clothing protects you from a literally bad abrasion would be wrong. The test showed that single-layer motorcycle textile trousers made from abrasion-resistant Cordura (polyamide) achieved a catastrophic result, and even a slightly grayed leather suit did not necessarily look better than most of the tested denim jackets and trousers after being thrown off. Some of the jeans, on the other hand, made a lively impression after the crash test and were still considered trendy Buxe with a subtle hole design.

When testing the cheap fashion jeans for 19.90 euros, you shouldn’t expect any fall protection.

Hans-Peter Fleischmann from the Hohenstein Institute in Bonnigheim (textile research facility) is hardly surprised: “Jeans were originally worn as work clothing, so they naturally have to be able to withstand a lot.” Jeans, more precisely: denim fabrics (from “Serge de Nîmes”, Fabrics from the French city of Nîmes) consist of a so-called twill fabric, which is particularly strong. They get their good durability through the use of heavy yarns. “That’s a lot of material”, explains the clothing expert, but points out that the quality does not only depend on the weight of the fabric (measured in ounces), but also largely on the quality of the cotton. Fleischmann: “The longer the fibers, the better the yarns can be made. The problem: you can hardly see it with the naked eye.”

The test also showed that double layers of material play a decisive role in abrasion. Summary: Solid, thick denim fabrics, with good workmanship, withstand even rough falls comparatively well. During a slide phase from around 100 km / h, friction heat can cause the clothing to reach a temperature of over 200 degrees Celsius at certain points, at which point synthetic fibers made of polyamide and polyester melt to form residues that burn into the skin. Cotton fibers, on the other hand, coagulate like flaring paper – they dissolve, as it were, into air – and the aramid fibers, which are ideally underlaid, only char at around 400 degrees.

In an emergency, the injuries would be less than with many similarly priced textile motorcycle suits without additional Kevlar protection. However, motorcycle denim clothing cannot replace a tight-fitting, high-quality leather suit. And high-end textile suits that are cut close to the body with many adjustment options, double layers of material and very abrasion-resistant fabrics such as Cordura 1000 or Schoeller dynatec or leather trimmings are used by the “Overalls” probably not trumped either. Motorcycle jeans and jackets are and will remain a compromise. A pretty good one, especially in summer, because you are not sweaty and overheated on the road – this is certainly good for the driver’s active safety. By the way, despite all the physical effort, Svenni was put back into the box safe and sound for his circumstances. After more than 20 ground contact on hard airfield asphalt, only a few scratches remained. Needless to say, even wearing the best motorcycle jeans, it is better to leave such sledding games to professionals with replaceable rubber skin.

A permanently installed scrap motorcycle can be tilted using a cable pull so that a fall is simulated at the defined dropping point. A hybrid 3 dummy made available by the Dekra Crashtest Center in Neumunster, dressed with one of the test samples in the appropriate clothing size for each run, sat on the motorcycle and was thrown onto the asphalt of the airfield at 80 km / h.

Practice driving:
The cut is reasonably tight, but by no means too tight when driving, so that it would pinch or squeeze. Even chunky motorcycle boots can be easily stowed away because of the zipper at the leg end. However, from 80 km / h, the slight flutter flutters in the airstream.

Security:
On the left side, after a few meters of sliding, it is minimally torn, smaller holes in the denim material. Larger wedge torn in the buttocks area, the Kevlar layer underneath remained undamaged. CE knee protectors in easily accessible compartments, but no option for retrofitting hip protectors.

Processing / equipment:
Nice, strong and heavy denim fabric, but the additional protective layer made of aramid fabric is very thin.

Conclusion:
The Axiom Denim just missed a very good rating because of a small safety deficit (lack of pockets for hip protectors). The Italian reveals her strengths in everyday use.

It sits full, it sits well. Like real motorcycle trousers, but the City 2 feels just that heavy. And the huge knee protectors first have to get up to temperature in order to snuggle up to you. At less than 15 degrees they are bulky and interfere with brisk wagging around bends.

Practice walking:
At almost two kilograms, the heaviest pants in the test. While driving, the uncomfortable knee protectors have already been criticized, while strolling through the city, the lack of comfort becomes a tangible complaint. In addition, summer temperatures over 20 degrees create a sweaty climate on the legs.

Security:
The very good CE knee and hip protectors can really score, especially since the completely enclosing seat on the knees sets a reference. It is a bit disappointing that Cordura was used instead of heat-resistant Kevlar for the double layers of material at crash sites.

Processing / equipment:
There is nothing to complain about here. The BMW clothing technicians have done a great job and put together extremely high-quality trousers with top-quality seams and useful equipment details such as closable outer pockets.

Conclusion:
Well-made pants with a high level of safety, but the balancing act between motorcycling and everyday use is rather difficult. The designation “City” doesn’t really fit, “Summer touring” would be more accurate.

Practice driving:
The comparatively wide cut trousers flutter in the lower leg area at country road speed, and drafts are admitted in the rump area, which is cut a little too short. Otherwise, the Draggin is a very comfortable pair of pants that offers a lot of freedom of movement.

Practice walking:
The thick, large-area reinforcements made of aramid fabric are barely noticeable, especially since the Silverback, including CE protectors, weighs just over a kilo. These pants work as a companion for day and night.

Security:
Convincing abrasion result after a violent fall in a crash test. The aramid layer was fully preserved as skin protection, only the denim tore and rubbed open to form larger holes. Unfortunately, hip protectors cannot be retrofitted and the CE knee protectors, which are at least well-enclosed, can easily slip.

Processing / equipment:
Neatly crafted seams, decent quality denim fabric, and no savings were made on the double layers of aramid. The somewhat improvised option of retrofitting the knee protectors (Velcro strips to be glued in) and the CE protectors themselves seem unsuitably cheap in view of the high price of the pants.

Conclusion:
The Silverback would be perfect with better protectors and more sophisticated compartments for CE protectors. But even so, they are great, if somewhat expensive, motorcycle jeans that you fall in love with from the first time you wear them.

Good CE protectors, on the other hand, ensure safety. The knee protectors, however, are a little too high.

The high price is largely due to the special material. Overall, the Esquad is a very passably processed and equipped motorcycle jeans.

Conclusion:
The painfully expensive jeans from France do not live up to their own claim to be exceptionally safe motorcycle jeans. Nevertheless, they are good, high-quality pants for bikes and the boulevard.

From 100 km / h the Ractor with its casual cut becomes a bit fluttering, but hardly disturbing. In the rump area it pulls in noticeably at this speed. The freedom of movement, however, is excellent.

The Held-Jeans do not spoil the wearer from excursions away from the motorcycle, however long. The foamed knee protectors are barely noticeable. The comparatively thin denim upper material quickly opened up in the event of a fall and was badly torn. The Kevlar layer underneath was also rubbed on the knee. Only the protectors, which do not completely enclose the knees, protected the (rubber) skin and (metal) bones of the dummy. Good: Compartments for CE hip protectors.

Processing / equipment:
No expensive delicatessen ingredients, but rather solid home cooking. The processing is fine.

Conclusion:
Fashionable and at the same time neatly made motorcycle jeans that are very comfortable to wear. And all for a very fair price. There is still money left for hip protectors that create even more security.

Practice driving:
It’s less noticeable during city cruising, but the wide-cut trousers flutter clearly on the country road. If you like it airy, great, but maybe not the best choice for longer tours. The rest of the fit is good, especially the legs are long enough not to slip up on boots.

Practice walking:
Sits as comfortably as gym shorts. Comfort and climate on the skin are fully programmed for summer. Since there are no protectors, the difference to conventional five-pocket fashion jeans is hardly noticeable.

Security:
No possibilities to attach CE protectors – bad! And the very sparsely used reinforcements made of Kevlar are also inadequate. It remains to be mentioned that the firm denim fabric withstood the fall reasonably well and only two palm-sized holes were recorded as losses. However, these motorcycle jeans are not particularly safe.

Processing / equipment:
Cool American style, made in China. As fashion jeans, the Icon would be in the upper league, but as motorcycle jeans they are simply too cheap and poorly equipped. Above all, the fact that savings were made on compartments for protectors is poor.

Conclusion:
Technically better than a pair of jeans from the fashion boutique. Good looking and incredibly cheap. Somewhat okay for city use, but please do not consider them to be full-fledged motorcycle trousers!

Practice driving:
The knee protectors almost slide up to the thighs in the driving position because the compartments are inappropriately attached. Apart from that, the pants offer great comfort and freedom of movement thanks to their comparatively elastic denim material.

Practice walking:
The protectors also interfere with this discipline because they are a bit bulky and hard on the knees. Without protection, the French woman wears herself like normal jeans, and then even weighs less than a kilogram. All kinds of utensils for a city tour can easily be stowed in the large main pockets. Security:

It would have been nice to have more comfortable and better fitting knee protectors and retrofit pockets on the hips. Otherwise a very good pair of jeans with strengths in everyday use. The Ixon is not only in the middle in terms of price.

Practice driving:
Slag should get along well with the very tight-fitting Dillon, but drivers with more muscular legs have an uncomfortable pinching of the back of their knees and the pants are not very comfortable to wear.

Practice walking:
The tight fit is more of a disadvantage in summer temperatures, it creates a sweaty climate on the skin faster than with more casual cut candidates. The five pockets are small and offer little storage space. The bottom line is that the Dillon is also fun on tours away from the motorcycle.

Security:
The IXS survived a stately slide of around 20 meters quite well. The thin but sturdy denim material had to give a lot of feathers at the knees, but the solid aramid layer underneath largely withstood the severe abrasion – only smaller holes were created. Also good: CE hip protectors can be retrofitted, and the body-hugging cut means that the protectors hardly slip.

Very neat and of a high standard.

Conclusion:
