“When I was 14, a guy took me on his machine. We raced over the autobahn with 200 things. He with a helmet, I without”, reports PS reader Sabine Schenk. It was a key experience for her: “Since then I knew that one day I would ride a motorcycle myself”. That was in the roaring seventies. Anyone who thinks that the woman is a little gaga has learned otherwise. The eight-time mother and five-time grandmother – “don’t they have a TV at home?” Astonished a PS colleague – is quite down-to-earth. At least when she’s not on a bike.

Bimota DB9 Brivido so far without any problems
The now 54-year-old has plenty of motorbikes. Together with her partner Jurgen, who is also affected by the biker virus, she runs a proud fleet of nine machines. All without full fairing, most of them only a few years old: two Bimotas, an MV Agusta, an Aprilia, a Benelli and a BMW. You don’t indulge yourself in anything else. Japanese? An older Suzuki Bandit converted into a street fighter ekes out its existence in the garage. There are also two enduro bikes from Yamaha somewhere. But only the Europeans are used for the numerous day tours – today the Bimota DB9 Brivido.
Together with our Suzuki GSX-R 1000 we go from the village of Ried near Kochel am See in Upper Bavaria via a few villages towards Ohlstadt. From there the Bundesstrabe 2 leads to Oberau, where we are stuck in a traffic jam. “A bottleneck, especially on weekends or public holidays like today, there is a lot going on here. Unfortunately there is no alternative route, “explains Sabine. From Oberau the B 23 runs towards Ettal, where fans of baroque architecture will get their money’s worth at the famous Benedictine abbey. We forego sightseeing and continue on a winding road lined with greenery towards Plansee. We have now passed the border into Austria almost unnoticed. Very wild boys and girls should be on their guard with our alpine friends. The gendarmes there are strict, the speed tickets expensive. And you have to carry a first aid kit. If you get caught without, you may pay.
The lake, which is surrounded by mighty mountains, is a popular meeting place for motorcyclists, and even today a lot of bikes are filling the parking lot again. With the Bimota, Sabine is immediately in the center of attention: “Are you satisfied? How much is the? Is it reliable? ”“ Yes, very satisfied. Twenty-two, got it cheaper. Yes, so far it has been running without any problems. “
I only got my driver’s license when I was 48 years old
Saddle up and continue to Reutte. From there we roar on the B 179 south to Bichlbach, where the L 21 branches off to the right into the Namlos Valley. For someone who only got a driver’s license at the age of 48, the native of Berlin lets things go well. “Actually, I wanted to ride a motorcycle much earlier, but then the children got in the way.” Obviously, she is living her passion all the more today.
The Namlos Valley is no longer an insider tip for motorcyclists. Especially when the weather is nice on weekends and public holidays, many conspecifics cavort on the winding and very scenic route. We drive through the valley twice, the camera of the PS photographer glows: clack, clack, clack. Then a break is due. We are spot on here too, friendly signs “Bikers welcome” often invite you to take a well-deserved rest.
It’s gotten late now. Time to jet back to Ried. The route: On the B 179 towards Lermoos, then to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and on the wonderfully winding road past the magnificent Walchensee to another highlight of the tour, the Kesselberg. The former mountain race track connects the Walchensee with the Kochelsee. Unfortunately, it is only accessible for bikes from the south side on weekends and public holidays. During the week, sports drivers in particular give themselves to the edge on the route, which is limited to 60 km / h, crashes not excluded. Accordingly, sheriffs lurk here often – watch out! Today there is no race control in sight, the annoying look at the speedometer is no longer necessary. At home in Ried, Sabine gets off her machine and returns to the role of mother and housewife. And suddenly it’s down to earth again.
