New Indian V2

Top engine arrives in the Raptor in 2019

Indian is working on a new generation of V engines. The unit, now caught in a Erlkonig, has a displacement of 1.8 liters, water cooling and 120 hp. It will come in 2019 in the new Raptor touring model.

The US motorcycle manufacturer I.ndian has patented new model names in quick succession. Raven, Renegade and Challenger were registered as trademarks, also for use on new models. So far, speculation has led to derivatives of the new FTR 1200.

But now an Indian Erlkonig has been caught in the USA who is leading in a completely new direction. The Erlkonig pictures that appeared on the Internet have apparently disappeared very quickly at the insistence of Indian, but something can be deduced from them. A touring motorcycle with a frame-mounted half-shell fairing in the style of a Harley-Davidson Road Glide was on display.

Water-cooled V2 for Euro 5 Indian

The real hammer, in the truest sense of the word, sits further down in the frame. Here was a clearly liquid-cooled V2 with a 60 degree cylinder angle, which had not been installed in any other Indian model before. Cylinder heads, each with an overhead camshaft and four-valve technology, could also be seen. US media want to have learned from sources at Indian that the new engine is based on a displacement of 108 cubic inches – the equivalent of around 1.77 liters – and generates 120 hp from it.

Another clear sign of the new engine is a patent application from Polaris (parent company of Indian) for Indian from March 2019. The patent revolves around a water-cooled V2 engine, which was probably originally developed for the sister brand Victory as Victory Freedom V2, but optically matches the prototype caught.

New Indian models revealed

The third unambiguous reference is a product schedule that has now surfaced on the Internet, which clearly contains an Indian Raptor – the aforementioned touring model already caught – for the 2020 model year that carries just that new V2. The new FTR 1200 models are also listed in the product timetable. An Apollo Tracker will come in 2019, an FTR 1200 Street in 2020 and an Adventure in 2021. There is also a MiniBall version of the Scout in the timetable.

The new V2 is obvious, as all the large Indian models are driven by an air-cooled V2 that only produces 87 hp from 1,811 cm³ in the Euro 4 vote. With the upcoming Euro 5 standard, the current V2 should reach its absolute limits.
