Yamaha Tricity in the driving report
Over train tracks and cobblestones
It is not a scooter and certainly not a motorcycle. It’s the Yamaha Tricity. It’s easy to deduce: three wheels for the city. We swung our way through the sheet metal avalanche for a test.
D.Congestion, lack of parking spaces, traffic blackouts – urban commuters can tell a lot about it. Good for those who have the demands of everyday urban madness on their radar when choosing a vehicle: the base should be light, manoeuvrable and compact, practical, comfortable and, at best, cheap to buy and maintain.

Yamaha Tricity in the driving report
Over train tracks and cobblestones
Tricity offers a three-wheel alternative. The key data: 125 cubic meters, 11 hp, 152 kilograms, 3595 euros. This means that the Yamaha Tricity is clearly below the larger-capacity and significantly more massive three-wheeler competitors from Piaggio and Peugeot, both in terms of performance and price.

Yamaha Tricity particularly strong on tricky surfaces
Even if most of the MOTORRAD readership are not likely to find getting around on two wheels too unstable – the Yamaha Tricity is definitely convincing in the city. Thanks to the relatively low weight and the narrow track width of 385 millimeters, it curves around standing sheet metal avalanches, where MP3s and others line up at the back. The non-lockable tilting mechanism called the Leaning Multi Wheel by Yamaha does its job unobtrusively in the best sense of the word. The Tricity can be moved intuitively from the first few meters and, with its playful cornering and cornering behavior, is closer to a single-track vehicle than its big three-wheeler competitors. This is due, among other things, to a low center of gravity and the 50:50 weight distribution (“Moto GP technology”!). With large 14-inch front wheels and a soft suspension, bumps are comfortably ironed out. The cloven-hoofed animal shows its strengths on a tricky surface: tram rails, wet cobblestones and sloping curbs can be taken under the wheels without hesitation. The additional wheel also provides safety when braking. The three-disc system, which is designed as a combination brake, makes it very easy for the user: all discs decelerate evenly and, if necessary, vehemently using the left brake lever.
If the reaction time is good, the drive of the Yamaha Tricity is sufficient not to attract the anger of other road users at the traffic lights. Overland, the water-cooled two-valve engine then reaches its limits, from 70 kilometers an hour there is only homeopathic propulsion. Much more important, however: the storage compartment holds a full-face helmet, a luggage hook holds the daily shopping, the weather protection is good, the consumption is low and the quality is right. Tall drivers may miss some legroom, but otherwise the ergonomics are also good. So if you have at least an A1 driver’s license (or class 3, acquired before April 1st, 1980) and don’t want to dig too deep into your pocket for a brisk threesome, you can’t go wrong with the Tricity.
