It is July 1, 2020, exactly two years after the start of the 80 km / h "experiment" on the roads. This speed limit – which has cost many points and even more euros to all those who do not drive with their nose riveted on the speedometer but with their eyes far ahead! – has it borne fruit in terms of road fatalities ? Not sure…

The President of the Republic has just "proposed by the 150 members of the, but the one on the 80 km / h on the road carried by his Prime Minister could well resurface: how to take stock of this experiment, while France has just come to a halt during two months of confinement after being shaken in all directions by the movement of ?!

Anne Lavaud, general delegate of the road prevention association questioned this morning on RTL, believes that "taking stock today is impossible", while for the independent 80 km / h evaluation committee the answer is clear: the government must end the experimentation.

"Some sources close to the case put forward the idea of postponing the end of the experiment, supposed to take into account this unprecedented period during which road trips were greatly reduced and accidents obviously impacted", notes his President Jean-Luc Michaud recalling that "the experiment of 80 km / ha led, with variations statistically too uncertain and insignificant, to an inconclusive result and unrelated to the targeted goal of 400 deaths saved per year".

3 billion euros

The 80 km / h on the other hand "cost to the population – in particular outside the agglomerations – millions of hours lost representing each year nearly 3 billion euros and a slowing down of the life of the country", he continues by asking the government to "put an end to the experimentation with the measure on July 1, 2020".

The Committee therefore recommends, following the possibility already offered to the departments of returning to the speed of 90 km / h on the roads which lend themselves to it, to "generalize this decision by a return to the initial speed while leaving to the elected officials the care. to assess in the field the real dangerousness of the secondary network and to adapt the authorized speeds accordingly ".

"We demand the return to 90 km / h!"

For its part, the League for the Defense of Drivers "demands that all of France return to 90 km / h, definitively renounces the absurd measure of 80 km / h and that the State finally implement a road safety policy actually saving lives on the road ".

"As was to be expected, while these 24 months expired on June 30, 2020, absolutely nothing has been demonstrated", denounces the association: "worse, Edouard Philippe’s team remains for the moment unable to provide the results of this "experiment." Now not only do we demand these results, but better still, we demand the return to 90 km / h! "
