The National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory (ONISR) has just published its. And as we have known for 6 months (read), contrary to what the government suggests month after month, the results are particularly excellent for bikers with a 20% drop in fatalities.

An unprecedented global decline since 1948

FFMC denounces "state propaganda"

"Everyone can thus see that the propaganda of the State, in particular by the voice of Claude Gueant (Minister of the Interior and therefore recently of road safety) only serves to justify an absurd policy", commented the Federation French bikers angry at the announcement of these final results. "Indeed, based on very specific results from the beginning of 2011, and comparing them with the exceptional year 2010, the government and its emergency IRB have proposed new measures, each more repressive and inappropriate than the other and managed the feat of bringing together in the street on June 18 all categories of road users, outraged by such bad faith ".

"In addition, if motorcycle accidents are decreasing relatively little in absolute value, the fleet is increasing sharply, with a number of motorized two-wheelers in circulation which has practically doubled in ten years", recalls the association for the defense of bikers: "motorcycles and scooters are therefore making enormous progress, much better than those of other categories of users".

Finally, the FFMC specifies that "the 2011 figures presented as unbearably bad remain lower than those of 2009, thus continuing the underlying trend of a regular decline in mortality observed for almost thirty years, with or without radars".

"The year 2010, despite an increase in traffic of around + 1.9%, saw mortality drop below the 4,000 killed mark: unprecedented since 1948 while motorized traffic has meanwhile been multiplied by more than 27 ", notes the Observatory, stressing that motorized two-wheelers are experiencing" a spectacular improvement: -19.8% and up to -20.7% for motorcycles alone ".

Note also that this considerable drop in the number of bikers killed is particularly obvious at weekends, a traditionally heavy moment in terms of road fatalities..

Aperitif time…

Finally, with regard to the hours of the day and the night, there is always a significant peak in mortality between the beginning of the afternoon (end of a well-watered lunch?) And the middle of the evening (aperitif?). .. Anyway, the proportion of fatalities "with alcohol factor" is 30.8%, or nearly a third of fatal accidents. Too bad that unlike speed, the fight against drunk driving is not profitable…
