Turismo Veloce Lusso test: with weapons, without luggage
Six months after participating in the official launch of the Turismo Veloce 800, Site went to MV Agusta in Varese (Italy) to test the high-end version nicknamed “ Lusso ”, equipped in particular with electronic suspensions… Andiamo !
Turismo più veloce, not più grande
Fourth and main element fitted as standard on the MV Agusta Turismo Veloce Lusso: the original Sachs suspensions whose electronic control system is already fitted to certain Ducati and BMW in particular…
Andrea Boerio, project manager at the German equipment manufacturer, explains: "the hardware, or components if you prefer, that we supplied for the Lusso were basically the same as for the Multistrada S, but their development was specific, and the software that manages the valves is designed by MV Agusta, via the company E-Shock".
Semi-active, the system on board the Lusso acts only on the hydraulics. "Solo, luggage and duo settings do not change the preload", emphasizes a member of the MV Agusta technical team.
To adjust the attitude of the motorcycle according to its load, the rider will therefore have recourse to the accessible wheel (under the rider’s seat on the right) for the rear shock absorber, and to the single screw (on the straight tube) for the fork.
"You will mainly travel small roads, with holes, bumps … this is Italy !", warned us the press manager just before our departure. MNC must admit that MV Agusta certainly did not spare his Turismo Veloce Lusso…
An excellent choice since it is a question of gauging the capacities of the new suspensions! To start its 180 km trip, Site selects the Rain mode which, as a reminder, calms the Tre Pistoni and the bridle at 80 hp (read our Technical point on the "standard TV").
Thus regulated, the MV Agusta road is extremely easy to handle. In addition to the very considerate nature of the engine, the incredible smoothness of the injection and the efficiency of the quickshifter, the Lusso eliminates the many irregularities of the small streets of Varese..
Moderately constrained by the soft 3-cylinder, the shock absorber then compensates for the slight lack of softness at the level of the rider seat (especially on the rear). The fork for its part, plunges generously under braking, which is an excellent point. !
Indeed, although they are perfectly dosable and not excessively biting, the Nissin calipers are powerful and can easily block the front wheel during "reflex" braking on fat-wet … In Rain mode, the tire has more time to settle into the asphalt.
Very quickly, however, MNC adopted Touring mode: admittedly, the temperatures in the air and on the ground were cool, but the surface was dry and the grip of the Pirelli Scorpion Trail was very engaging. In addition, the reactions of the engine are thus more lively past 5000 rpm and 10 additional horses come out of the stable….
While remaining very comfortable, the Lusso especially sits a little more firmly on its front end near the hairpins. The option "antidive"(anti-dive) – which the user can check or not in the" custom "or customizable mode, not" the feet first "! – is probably activated in Touring.
But it is in Sport mode that Site preferred (badly) to lead his mount. More rigorous, the Turismo Veloce does not become "brutal" … or "Dragster" should we rather write! Some pilots who descend from F3 or F4 could even criticize it for being still too flexible…
On the other hand, bikers who think they are Jules Cluzel or Leon Camier (entered by the brand this year in Supersport and Superbike) cannot blame this Turismo Veloce for the lack of consistency between the front and rear axles which affects the efficiency of the "standard" version !
In the curves negotiated quickly, the Lusso wedges more firmly on its two Sachs suspensions (Marzocchi and Sachs on the standard), and the passage over a bump or in a hollow does not cause the same waddle of the rear.
We can even cheat a little: the hydraulics of its electronic suspensions set to "duo" – in two stages, three movements of the thumb -, the Lusso certainly does not reach the degree of precision and efficiency of an F3 800 launched on the Misano circuit, but it still gains a little in stability.
The pilot is then sufficiently confident to maintain a very high pace on the road, and a fortiori on bumpy roads! In this case, the Turismo Veloce Lusso benefits from remarkable traction, much better than that of a sports car often set too rigid….
The "païlote" of the Lusso fully benefits from the 110 hp of the beast and its heady vocalizations: what a foot to blacken the bars of the digital tachometer beyond 7000 rpm! But it is imperative to beware of tricky areas, to control yourself in dangerous ones … and to spot the radars. !
The driving position of this "trail GT with a sporting tendency" also contributes to this good compromise between sport and comfort. Identical in every way to the "standard TV", the Lusso takes care of adults particularly well with its flat tank and its appreciable saddle / footrest distance.
In return, the saddle posted at 850 mm prevents the little ones from putting both feet on the ground when stationary. Without saddle height adjustment, the Lusso – like the standard – unfortunately cannot be fitted with a low saddle. We will have to do with without !
Although our route did not include a motorway, MNC was able to verify that vibrations still colonized the saddle and the tank and that the bubble even raised by 60 mm – via the very practical clamp! – did not protect the top of the helmet and the shoulders.
In addition, by stopping in front of the main building of the MV Agusta factory, the Journal moto du net once again becomes aware of the mechanical noises emanating from the engine (distribution, clutch, etc.): the noise is incessant, unbearable for a lot and worrying for some.
Finally, while our test model behaved perfectly during our short day of testing, the copies of two colleagues were not as satisfactory: accelerometer cut behind the front fender, brake light flooded and broken, incorrectly mounted suitcase barrel…
Even though MV Agusta officials assure us that these problems are quite exceptional, on "eighteen-mile" machines – which moreover are officially presented to journalists – it is messy! Especially since these technical "hiccups" do not really constitute a first (read in particular our)…
In the end, the Tursimo Veloce Lusso marks a notable improvement over the standard version in terms of dynamic behavior, especially on the attack. The suspensions are better tuned and allow more enjoyment of the fabulous 3-cylinder.
On the other hand, we regret that the € 1,800 extension does not include the suitcases … Fortunately, the end of year celebrations are fast approaching, and it would be fashionable for MV Agusta to offer them as gifts to its future customers, in a "Special Christmas Pack"…
MNC’s little finger also whispers to us that dealers could be encouraged to use it to finalize the sale. A commercial gesture that would not be "Lusso" in view of the frankly high price, especially for a trail of "only" 798 cc…
To be completely complete, the Lusso should also have been equipped with a higher and wider bubble. But the "Gran Turismo" program may be reserved for another MV Agusta machine … Could a new – true – grand touring motorcycle equipped with the next 4-cylinder come in 2016? ?
"No", the Italians clearly answer us."We had a lot of work with the new version of the Brutale 800 that we wanted accessible to more people. His Tre Pistoni will be closer to the version mounted on the Turismo Veloce ".
"Three other new motorcycles will be available on our stand at the Milan show in a month, then in Birmingham and Paris at the beginning of December", announces MV Agusta. The 2016 novelties of Varese – and elsewhere! – will be followed on Site: stay tuned…
