At EICMA 2017, Royal Enfield presented the two new models Interceptor INT 650 and Continental GT 650. Now we were allowed to try out the two retro bikes.

From a purely visual point of view, the two new Enfields are definitely a real eye-catcher.

In the US, the Interceptor 650 starts at $ 5,799. The Contiental GT 650 shown in the picture is available from $ 5,999.

Except for the tanks, the handlebars and the position of the footrest, the two motorcycles are identical.

Enfield praises the Interceptor as a roadster, but the high, wide handlebars with screwed-on center strut convey an almost scrambler feeling.

The new twin quickly turns out to be a steady turner, delivering more than 80 percent of its maximum torque of 52 Nm up to 2500 rpm.

The engine clearly has its feel-good area in the middle, whereby it does not shine with exuberant temperament, but as a loosely controllable, gentle and sociable engine makes life easy for both beginners and old hands.

The Continental GT 650 offers a sportier seating position, with which you can stab a little tighter and crisper around the corners.

And since the Continental scribbles across the floor with its notches clearly later than the Interceptor, it can be a bit more oblique with it.

Royal Enfield will also build electric motorcycles from 2024
Royal Enfield will also build electric motorcycles in the future
The first electric motorcycle comes in 2024
Rudratej Singh, President of Royal Enfield, confirmed in 2018 that the motorcycle brand, which has regained its strength in Europe, will also build electric motorcycles in the future. The company is now aiming for the first e-bike for 2024.

The first rumors arose at EICMA 2017 that the Royal Enfield could deal with the topic of electric motorcycles in the future. This does not mean, however, that the manufacturer, which is slowly but surely becoming increasingly important in Europe, will withdraw from its previous core business. Just the establishment of new models such as the Himalayan, the Interceptor INT 650, the Continental GT 650 and the new ones Meteor 350 made that clear.
Royal Enfield electric motorcycle arrives in 2024
Nevertheless, the traditional manufacturer – which has its roots in England, but now produces in India – does not want to miss the opportunity and also has a say in the market for electric motorcycles. In an interview with an Indian automobile website, company president Rudratej Singh confirmed in March 2018 that Royal Enfield was driving a project that deals with an electric model.
In August 2020, Royal Enfield CEO Vinod Dasari followed up in an interview with the financial publication moneycontrol.com. With a specially set up development team, various, purely electrically powered prototypes have already been put on the wheels. It is currently being evaluated in which segment one would like to compete with electrically powered models. However, the question is not whether you want an e-motorcycle, but only when and where you will compete with it.
In December 2020 there will be new information from India. According to current plans, Royal Enfield’s first electric motorcycle should come in 2024. This has to do with the fact that India will ban small-volume combustion motorcycles with up to 150 cm³ from 2025. They then only have a future with an electric drive. Royal Enfield fears that this restrictive legislation could also be extended to larger displacement classes in the future. The bestsellers in the Royal Enfield range are currently the 350 models.
manufacturer
The Royal Enfield Himalayan was first presented in Europe at INTERMOT 2016 in Cologne.
It will be exciting to see which path Royal Enfield will take when it comes to electric motorcycles. In recent years, the manufacturer has drawn attention to itself with beautifully designed and functional bikes that are available for a comparatively low price.
Conclusion
With its transport policy, India relies heavily on electrification. Royal Enfield, as a major Indian motorcycle manufacturer, cannot avoid it. Electric motorcycles are coming – it’s just not yet clear in which segment and for which markets.
