In general, the whole frame is just a finger exercise for the engineers and is therefore not to be expected in series production in the near future.

At the BMW Group Digital Day 2018, the Bavarians presented numerous innovations for future models and production technologies. Among other things, BMW presented the development status of the 3D printing process. So far, this technology, in which, to put it simply, metal powder is fused into a predefined shape using laser beams, has mainly been used in prototype construction.
Frame production using the 3D printing process

Only a prototype and not for the series – frames from the 3D printer.
At BMW, however, various small series of parts are already being produced using the 3D printing process, including for the i8 hybrid sports cars. A frame prototype for a BMW S 1000 RR shows what would be feasible in motorcycle construction. Here, the complete main frame and the rear swing arm were manufactured in the form of lattice structures using the 3D printing process.
Its surface, however, looks very rough and not ready for series production. In general, the whole frame is just a finger exercise for the engineers and is therefore not to be expected in series production in the near future.
In the Additive Manufacturing Center in Munich, BMW produces around 140,000 prototype parts every year using the 3D printing process for the various development departments of the Bavarian corporation.
