Kymco is exhibiting in Cologne (Germany) the final version of its AK 550 sports maxi-scooter, presented as a concept in 2014 in Milan (Italy). This frontal competitor to the Tmax 530 offers strong arguments to tackle the bestseller Yamaha, starting with practical aspects and slightly higher performance.

Spiked rear hull, angular fairing sides incorporating a row of LED lights: stylistically, the new Kymco AK 550 maxi-scooter draws its inspiration largely from the star of the category, the! Its parallel twin-cylinder – liquid cooled, twin ACT and eight valves – coupled to a belt transmission also technically refers to the benchmark. The AK 550 nevertheless develops its own arguments, and not the least, such as its additional 20 cc which allows it to display 53.5 hp and 55.6 Nm of torque against 46.5 hp and 52.3 Nm for the Tmax 530.

Even if he admits 4 kg more than the Japanese scooter (226 kg against 222 kg), the new Kymco takes the advantage on paper in terms of performance. But an engine that breathes is not enough: the beautiful output 60 hp and 63 Nm from its 647 cc twin – also manufactured by Kymco – its sales are far from equaling those of the Tmax. Kymco has captured it perfectly: in addition to its rather sexy exterior and its powerful engine, the AK 550 is therefore generous on the practical aspects with two glove boxes (one with USB socket), an adjustable backrest, two maps of ‘injection (standard and rain), a fairly high screen, very colorful digital instrumentation, a state-of-the-art Bosch ABS and above all a trunk under the saddle capable of carrying a jet helmet in addition to a full face (a helmet only on the Tmax).

Its cycle part uses aluminum on the frame and sporting peripherals such as a pretty 41mm inverted fork at the bottom of which appear Brembo calipers with radial mounting and petal discs. The rear damping is entrusted to a mono-shock absorber – fairly basic because it has no rods – offset to the left in a horizontal position. Its 15-inch rims are fitted with 120 and 160 mm tires as on the Yamaha, while its saddle is more accessible with 785 mm in height against 800 mm for the star of the category. To confirm its status as "Tmax Killer", this AK 550 could be exchanged for € 9,500, ie significantly below the € 10,999 requested by Yamaha…
