Urban city scooter
With more than ten years of good and loyal service, the Beverly is one of the flagship scooters of the Italian manufacturers with more than 300,000 models sold worldwide, despite a rather high price for a 125 cm3. So, deserved success ?
Discovery
The Beverly is a Piaggio and, like many models of the brand, adopts the famous central tie incorporating the brand’s logo, overhung here by a huge oblong headlight, clearly visible from the driver’s station..
On both sides, we find the indicators and night lights in the form of a bar of 5 LEDs. The overall lines are harmonious and rather rewarding from the stern to the bow, with in particular this pretty two-story saddle which ends in a parquet rack. Its size could even bring it closer to a larger displacement, especially with its large 16-inch front wheel (and 14 inches only at the rear).
Even the rear has a naughty side with its raised luggage rack and aesthetic LED lights but especially particularly visible. Finally, we note the two retractable footrests in the body.
In the saddle
No flat-bottomed floor for this model despite the large wheels, but a tank in the center and space for the feet on either side. The hands rest naturally on the handlebars while the knees do not go up. We are therefore well seated, naturally. The 1.70 rider will barely touch the ground with a wide saddle placed at 790 mm but the weight placed base and the apparent lightness of the whole make that this does not pose any problem..
Under the eyes we find the counter with three screens common in particular with the Yourban. Particularly clear and readable, we therefore find: analog meter in the center with clock, partial double trip, totalizer, battery voltage, outside temperature, frost indicator (below 1 ° C), analog fuel gauge on the left and temperature on the right. Everything is easily changed by pressing the mode button on the right. There are also the oil, injection and gasoline reserve indicators..
On the other hand, no warning! In the center, a bag holder ring will allow the lock to be wedged, which finds its place more easily here than in the trunk, the shape of which does not adapt well to hard bars. Underneath, there is a large glove box / storage compartment, the opening of which is not always obvious on a daily basis..
Contact
Kickstand folded (impossible to start otherwise), the 4T single cylinder snorts gently. Right handle turned fully, the engine goes up in the revs but the departure is inversely proportional to the howling of the engine. It is therefore necessary to wait a short delay before seeing the scoot go slowly, even if the response to the request of the accelerator is immediate. The engine is not a thunderbolt despite its 15 horsepower but once started and especially from 30 km / h, it rises gently in the revs up to 70 km / h, then more slowly up to 80 or even 90 km / h. Well launched, it is even possible to push it beyond the symbolic bar of 100 km / h with a desire just thwarted at the first hill which will make it descend below 90 km / h..
In the city
The Beverly is instantly taken in hand, with exemplary lightness and ease. The steering is precise and allows you to slip happily between the cars, further helped by a narrow template, which allows you to go anywhere effortlessly, even at very low speed. However, we especially appreciate its immediate stability, which allows you to feel immediately at ease on your handlebars..
Highway
Uh … of course, the displacement officially makes it possible to engage on the fast axes. But with a top speed limited to 110 km / h and still well launched and without false flat (120 km / h counter reached despite everything in slight descent and well launched) the Beverly is not here in its most secure element, especially when overtaken by trucks. And yet, even at top speed, it retains healthy steering and excellent stability that could encourage riding at that top pace..
Braking
No ABS or coupled braking, but the braking is gentle and effective. In fact, the braking of the Beverly is very close to the braking offered by the Yourban: efficient with a rather good feeling. The front brake does not plunge forward even when gripped violently, while the rear can even lock if you apply the brakes very hard. The whole thing offers good braking, easily controlled, at the height of the power of the two-wheeler..
Comfort
Less comfortable than a Yourban, the Beverly is nonetheless comfortable, especially compared to other 125s and especially as a duo, where it bounces less on the roughness of the road. In fact, it is much more comfortable in duet than solo.
Without windshield and without protection, the front shape generates mainly wind at the level of the legs, even more sensitive when the outside temperature goes down.
Consumption
With its 12.5-liter tank, the Beverly offers a range of just over 200 kilometers. It must be said that with his character, we tend to open more abruptly in order to try to make it roll a little faster..
The filler hatch incorporates an anti-backflow valve and suddenly, it is difficult to fill the 12.5 liters of the tank with certainty, which can reduce the effective autonomy as much..
Convenient
The trunk opens easily under the saddle, ignition key engaged and left stalk button pushed. The whole thing frees up a space, always lit, which can accommodate a modular helmet or two jet helmets. It is clearly one of the most spacious safes in the category.
The spoked / spoke wheels are very aesthetic but narrow, make it impossible to slip a chain through. Be careful also before placing an anti-theft device so that the width of the latter allows it to pass between the sticks: this is possible but not with all models on the market..
The 162 kilogram weight is easily handled, even with the stroller, engine off to bring it into the garage. The side stand is also well positioned, allowing it to be unfolded and folded in a natural way. Be careful, however, there is no parking brake and we will therefore prefer the center stand on a slightly sloping road so that the scooter does not roll by itself, not to mention that once on the ground on the other hand, we can feel the 162 kilos to be reassembled in the upright position.
Conclusion
Stable, manoeuvrable, balanced, precise, plush, the Beverly 125 is pleasant to drive, only limited by its power of 15 horses which does not make it a thunderbolt, hampered in particular by its weight which limits its overall performance. However, it offers pleasant driving on a daily basis, including and above all as a duo with an excellent load capacity for the displacement, which make it a real urban scooter. We appreciate its aesthetics, especially in its white livery, the most beautiful effect, not to mention the overall finish. But at 3,790 euros in launch price (3,990 euros), the question will arise for the rider to switch either directly to the 350 cm3 version aesthetically almost identical but with double the power for only a thousand euros additional or downright to the Liberty 125 3V , 1,300 euros cheaper, certainly without the same level of services as this model placed rather in the top of the range.
