The Burgman is the line of Suzuki scooters, available in 125, 200, 400 and 650 cm3. The 400 version is aesthetically very close to the 125 version, and a priori far from a little sister of the 650 version. So, super 125 boosted or under 650 ?
Discovery
The Burgman promises to be opulent: well designed, majestic with a GT front end, it wins. Despite being only 15mm shorter than the 650, it offers as much room for the driver as the 650 but with the exterior level a happy medium between a huge Burgman 650 which struggles to squeeze between the lines without folding the mirrors and the 125 too small. Like the big brother, it benefits from a tubular steel frame, a 41 mm hydraulic fork and 260 mm double discs at the front.
On the storage side, it is very well designed with three storage compartments with a large capacity and a space under the saddle allowing to place two integral without difficulty..
On the dashboard, we notice the electronic immobilizer flashing light, the parking brake warning light, the exterior temperature and engine temperature indication, the Neiman protection hatch (which can be manipulated with the back of the key). ). The on-board computer now offers instantaneous consumption calculation ….
In the saddle
The feet are naturally placed flat, even sitting on the saddle…. a surprise – and a pleasure above all – of size compared to the 650, since the saddle of the 400 culminates at only 710 mm against 740mm for the 650. But it is especially the weight which gives the impression of having a toy between hands…. the 400 being 54 kilos lighter (nothing less) compared to the 650. You don’t feel it at a standstill.
With plenty of room along the entire length, the feet easily find their place. The backbone is low enough to pass the legs to one side or the other without difficulty.
Contact
The Burgman 400 snorts with a muffled noise. The solicitation of the right grip manifests itself in an immediate dynamic reaction. We are very far from the sluggish side of the 125…. it must be said that the small mono is very swift despite its "only" 34 horses and 3.7 mkg of torque…. thus making thanks to the featherweight, easy to take. The whole thing gives fast and healthy reactions from the start.
In the city
Lightweight, manoeuvrable, the Burgman 400 is in its element and sneaks around easily, helped by a steering angle of 5.15m. The mirrors provide good visibility and never get in the way of interlocking. Even at low speed, the good balance of the masses really makes it possible to play with the scooter…. and we understand almost better the ease with which scooters pass between cars compared to many motorcycles.
Departmental
The Burgman 400 is happy to set off on departmental roads and very quickly exceeds legal authorized speeds. After the often good asphalt of the city, it is just as comfortable even on bad roads, without any side reactions. Suddenly, it encourages you to open up and accelerate the pace … while maintaining an excellent level of comfort for the pilot. Even changes of direction with passages over sideways deformations do not cause a bad reaction. You really have to push it to speed in curves for it to start showing its limits, when the competition has already sent you into the background with the same pace..
Highway
After the secondary roads, the Burgman swallows up just as easily on the motorway, where it quickly stabilizes at 140 km / h. In fact, it can still gain 20-25 km / h depending on the conditions, but at the cost of a good momentum. But above all, the direction then becomes more blurred. And while the high speed can be maintained without danger or real steering, safety and a feeling of comfort are much more important at 140 km / h. It is also the speed at which the bubble protects best because beyond that it admits its limits, being well below the protection provided by its 650 equivalent.
Duo
The passenger easily sits on a high saddle, providing good vision. The saddle is comfortable and the handles are well positioned. On the other hand, the higher weight associated with the almost light weight of the Burgman 400 results in a slight sway, which is felt when stopped and especially when maneuvering at slow speed; that is to say under 5 km / h.
Braking
The brakes are perfectly sized with the scooter, offering an excellent mix: progressiveness, efficiency and smoothness. In short, it slows down well and hard, without fear and without reproach…. so much so that we forgive the absence of ABS (available despite everything on the 2009 version).
Consumption
With a 14-liter tank (only 1 liter less than the 650), the Burgman 400 offers a range close to 300 km. If the consumption drops below 3 liters / 100, according to the on-board computer in consumption. instantaneous, it stabilizes at around 5 liters per hundred. And if you run out of fuel, it’s almost easy to push, especially compared to its big brother 650..
Convenient
3 front pockets: nothing less. They are more spacious and practical, even if only the large horizontal storage compartment (10 liters) has a key lock.
At the rear, the saddle mounted on a jack opens onto a 62-liter trunk, allowing for two integral, or even two modular! And there is still room for a small bag, a rain suit…. You can do your shopping for the week with !
Equipped with a side and central crutch, the two crutches are easy to handle. The plant will be used in particular when filling the tank.
The apron protects the lower part of the body well. The bubble offers good protection in the city but is not protective enough on the motorway, especially for large riders.
Conclusion
Lightweight, manoeuvrable, swift, the Burgman 400 is the best compromise for the biker wanting an easy urban and para-urban scooter. Its versatility will appeal to small riders even more than large ones and those for whom it is the ideal means of transport in town and in the outer suburbs. Its exceptional storage capacities make it a perfect tool. Its 200 euros less than the Silverwing and the Majesty are just the icing on the cake of a well-designed scooter, which has steadily improved over the years.
