Inner values and affordable used tariffs

Their appearance is considered a design sin. Inner values and cheap used tariffs, on the other hand, make the ST an extremely attractive sports tourer.

Looking for a fast boxer, preferably a 1200 with a first-class chassis and full engine power. Should be sporty and enjoy traveling. Appearance is not decisive, inner values and reliability are more important – if you go looking for a partner, you will land on the R 1200 ST, which was introduced in 2005. And is well advised with her, although the machine is generally not considered desirable. The front design gives the BMW the charm of a bizarre deep-sea fish, not everyone’s taste. Estimated cautiously, 90 percent find it just plain creepy.
But if you take a closer look, it is still a tenth that is worth taking a second look. In terms of driving dynamics, a stately 110 hp and fuller torque clearly set the 1200s apart from the predecessor R 1150 RS.
A grandiose payload of over 220 kilograms allows traveling with a pillion passenger and pick-up full suitcases, the wind protection is excellent. You can also set it up comfortably on the sports tourer. The bench seat can be lowered from 83 to 81 centimeters (up to 78 centimeters with an accessory), the windshield can be adjusted by 60 millimeters and the handlebars by 25 millimeters. The ST is an absolutely well thought-out motorcycle, a really smart alternative to the much more popular 1200 sisters GS and RT. Overall, however, there were probably too few clever buyers, because BMW took the sports tourer out of the range after only four years. Amazing: Since then, the demand has increased. The appearance of the ST does not change, but the tastes of interested parties do.

While other boxer BMWs such as the 1200 GS are often unscheduled visits to the workshop (problems with cardan shaft, gearbox, ABS, brake lines, wheel guidance, electrics, etc.), this applies R 1200 ST technically very reliable. At the on-site appointment, the focus is primarily on the equipment: ABS and heated grips are mandatory, otherwise the resale chances are significantly reduced. The ESA chassis is very attractive and price-increasing. Also attractive: BMW system case. Rarer, but a bonus for touring riders: increased Power Sportego triple clamp including tubular handlebar (around 600 euros) from BMW specialist Wunderlich, phone 02642/97980, www.wunderlich.de. For 59.95 euros there is also the very interesting Stealth lamp mask (without ABE!), Which gives the ST a new face with simple means (double headlight appearance). Private offers should be around 500 euros below comparable dealer offers in order to be competitive.

Market situation

A total of just over 7,000 units were produced, around 2,500 of which for the German market. Sales of the machine fell well short of expectations. Given that fewer than 2000 copies are registered in Germany, the selection for buyers is good. Many new R 1200 STs are 3000 euros below the originally very high new price (mostly around 14,000 euros). In the case of claims of 10,000 euros or more, however, the interest in visibly used ST is rather restrained. In the price range between 7000 and 9000 euros, however, bargain hunters go on the prowl, which similarly claimed 1200 GS or RT in comparison (rightly) appear too expensive and quickly strike. Interested parties are specifically looking for accurately maintained and well-equipped (ABS, ESA, suitcase) STs with no more than 20,000 kilometers on the clock.

Facelift

2005
The R 1200 ST will be delivered to dealers in March and will be the successor to the R 1150 RS in the sport touring segment. Price for the basic version: 12,500 euros. With special equipment such as partially integral ABS, heated grips, main stand, anti-theft alarm system and chrome-plated exhaust system, the ST quickly costs over 14,000 euros.

2006
The ESA chassis, which is initially only available for the R 1200 RT in the boxer series, can now also be ordered from the ST for a surcharge of 660 euros. ABS costs 1050 euros extra. The basic price of the ST is 12,962 euros, a full dresser including the case system is around 16,000 euros.

2007
In January, the special edition ?? Edition ??, limited to 500 pieces, is introduced. In the colors black and silver with ESA chassis, ABS II, the ASC anti-slip control, tire pressure control RDC, on-board computer, heated grips, chrome-plated exhaust system, main stand and luggage rack at a price of 15195 euros.

2008
The ST will be removed from the program. Last list price for the base model: 13,282 euros.
