Well-preserved bike from 1000 euros
The motorcycle novice can feel their way very economically and shoot down a well-preserved bike for as little as 1000 euros. But he can also park a motorcycle specially tailored to his needs in front of the garage: the gleaming chrome cruiser for the casual evening round, a compact tourer for the first long-distance journey through the Alps or a sporty country road sweeper, with which even longer weekend trips whet your appetite.
In general, when buying a used item, do not immediately ask the question “What is the last price?”. This will shut you down for serious sellers. The chemistry between the two negotiating partners should be right – and later on, there is usually still something to be said for the price shown. Ideally, you are not alone in an on-site appointment. If possible, motorcycle novices in particular should go on a shopping spree with an experienced cyclist. Stay away from unkempt motorcycles, to which the dirt of the last 2000 kilometers is still stuck, the chain is dry and washed out rusting and the tires show porous cracks. The famous barn finds are also dangerous: Grandfather clocks usually have a large number of standing defects. If these have to be remedied in the workshop, even the cheapest purchase will be a bottomless pit. And you only care about one thing: finally ride a motorcycle!

It doesn’t have to be a gigantic two-liter engine. Even in the compact 750 class, motorcycle novices will find authentic material that can be strolled on in the best easy rider style. A very hot tip: Honda’s Shadow 750, some of which already has youngtimer status. The water-cooled V-Twin has been on the road since 1997, followed by the more sharply styled sister model Black Widow for four years in 2000. Since 2004, thanks to the change from chain to cardan, the cleaning and maintenance effort has been reduced, in the Spirit version (from 2007) it is a really classically designed chopper with a 21-inch front wheel.
The 46 hp can be directed from a very low seat height without being overwhelmed. Choppers and cruisers are considered to be price stable, and the Shadow is no exception. Well-maintained first-generation bikes are available from 2500 euros, the popular Black Widow costs at least 1000 euros more.

Newcomers to the motorcycle scene have surely noticed the huge Yamaha MT-01: a primeval creature with a fat V-twin, 1670 cubic meters and 90 hp. Much too much for A2 owners, who like their little sister MT-03 could find. Here, too, characteristic: the rear end with two strong mufflers, and further stylistic borrowings from the great model characterize the face of the compact single-cylinder Yamaha.
Despite the delicious packaging, the MT-03’s appearance in the sales charts has remained rather modest since its model launch in 2006. Which, however, has nothing to do with the quality, because the lively engine puts you in a good mood with its pithy Ballermann sound. The seating position, which is designed for dynamic driving and is still comfortable even on long stages, fits in with this. Only on bumpy slopes does it get a little too inharmonious, the contrast between the soft fork and the hard strut at the back is too pronounced.
The new MT-03 costs just under 7,700 euros, used it is a real bargain: the offers start at under 3,000 euros, the maintenance condition is high for many offers, the mileage, on the other hand, is pleasantly low.

“We’ll get you sooner or later!” An advertising slogan that also fits this soft enduro, which celebrated its debut in 1991 and finally expired in the form shown here in 2007. In the common Internet sales portals, the KLE 500 on the other hand it is still common. If you have tough budget limits when buying a motorcycle, you should take a closer look at this long-legged bread-and-butter bike. Compared to the competition, the Paralleltwin (homologated with 48 hp since 1997) looks very bland, which is mainly due to compliance with exhaust gas and noise regulations. Despite the long suspension travel, the 500 does not have any real gripping qualities in off-road conditions, but it can stand out much better on winding country roads. From 1000 euros!

An extravagant motorcycle from Italy? To the unsuspecting person, that sounds like bitch in terms of technology, high maintenance costs and an expensive purchase price. But who is for the Aprilia Pegaso interested, can confidently cross out the above prejudices. In 1992, the 650 series with the single cylinder from the Austrian engine manufacturer Rotax appeared and initially made life difficult for the powerful, but on winding country roads to cumbersome athletes as a wild, unconventional fun bike. Over the years, however, the pitfalls of the model update also came, and the previously classy fun bike clearly lost its once radical appearance.
For the 1997 model year, it was supposed to be more suitable for touring with a significantly larger tank, but it looked more chubby than before. The special model Garda (from 1998) also hit the same line with a standard luggage set, but this did not bring many buyers.
From 2001 the carburetor was replaced by a modern injection system, and in 2005 the Pegaso was modeled more in the direction of the original idea. The new type with the 48 hp engine from the supplier Minarelli is the most interesting model for class A2 buyers – again slim and slim, technically fit and astonishingly cheap: from 3000 euros!

With the 38 hp single cylinder, Honda tried very late to get into the supermoto business again in 2005. When it comes to the equipment, there was no slouch: for the manageable new price of just under 5800 euros, there were high-quality stainless steel silencers, light aluminum rims and a light-emitting diode rear light, which was still exotic at the time. However, the package did not arrive properly in the scene. Whether it was the already well-hung single cylinder, which in its basic form was already in service in the 80s in the widespread enduro model Dominator?
The sales were also reflected in the construction period. In 2007 Honda heralded the last model year of the FMX. In any case, used buyers can rely on the robust, proven technology. Attractive models from private hands are available for less than 2000 euros.

If there is anything like the Golf class in the motorcycle scene, then this Suzuki is one of its classic representatives. Its history goes back a long way: in 1988 the GS 500 E, with various revisions it remained in the program until 2007. For many, it was, alongside the competitor model from Honda (CB 500), the driving school motorcycle to which they remained loyal after successful apprenticeship. With well over 50,000 sales, the Twin is of course still well represented in the inventory today. Carefully estimated, more than half of them are still on German roads.
The offer is correspondingly extensive. You can almost be picky about the 45 hp bike. The very early series (built up to 2000) is offered for bargain hunters for less than 1000 euros, the thoroughly revised 500 series (from 2001) and the fully disguised F (from 2004) are well-maintained and available for well under 2000 euros. If the condition is correct, you can’t go wrong with a purchase. First and foremost, hidden rust nests should be searched for. During the test drive it means: Open your ears! Howling noises indicate defective gears.

Courage for the exotic? Derbi is an old Spanish brand (founded in 1922), which is now part of the Italian Piaggio Group. With the Mulhacen 659, the scooter and light power forge tried briefly (2006 to 2011) to get involved in the big motorcycles. The single-cylinder engine comes from Yamaha, which, despite all the exoticism, makes the procurement of spare parts a little easier.
The slim vehicle in the trendy scrambler dress is particularly popular on short trips, the suspension setup fits even on poor roads, and the front brake is powerful. Only the engine tuning does not fit: There is a huge gap in performance, especially in the middle of the engine speed. Anyone who wants to dare to dance with the Spaniard has to search hard. The 48 hp bike is only sparsely represented. From 2500 euros.

Fun, fun, fun! That was the motto in the nineties, and almost every manufacturer had a so-called fun bike in their program: long-legged enduros that were knitted with grippy road tires for nimble cornering. As with the Cagiva Canyon 600, which from 1996 to 1997 provided robust propulsion with its rough one-cylinder. This has already been used as a modular solution in other models, in the Canyon the engine fires its volleys, especially in the upper speed range, thanks to sharper camshafts and a shorter gear ratio.
The other side of the coin: lazy shifting driving is not his thing, below 3000 rpm it is extremely rough. Anyone interested in the Italo bike should be patient and have a knowledgeable companion at their side during the used check. From 1500 euros.

Let a kid paint a motorcycle – it will be like that W 650 to look like. Because that’s this Kawasaki: a motorcycle straight out of a picture book. It looks like it was decades old, but it didn’t hit stores until 1999. With an interesting mix of styles, it quotes classic English motorcycle construction (BSA, Triumph) from the early and late 1960s. The engine (up to 2003 with 50 hp) then becomes completely independent: air-cooled twin with vertical shaft as camshaft drive and four valves per combustion chamber. And for starting, there is an authentic kick starter in addition to the electric starter.
Test riders shouldn’t be surprised by the too soft fork, overstrained shock absorbers and slack brakes. Unfortunately, that is part of the Kawa. Due to the high handlebars, it also tends to swing slightly from a speed of 120 km / h. It will be better if a lower and shorter handlebar is installed as an alternative. A2 owners who consider their first motorcycle to be an investment in the future have made the right choice with the Retro-Kawa. With good care, it really retains its value. The prize poker starts at 3000 euros.

In the late 1990s, Yamaha’s little drag star swam well with the slowly ebbing soft chopper wave and was able to sell well in its ten-year construction period (from 1997): Over 25,000 copies were sold in Germany. What that means for those interested in used: a wide range, be picky, price negotiable!
Big cinema is offered for little money (from 2000 euros): rigid frame look, wide rear wheel, long wheelbase. There is also no lack of chrome curtains typical of the genre. A clear advantage when buying a chopper: low odometer readings, high standard of care. You can feel the disadvantages when driving: sluggish acceleration, sluggish handling.
Plus: Maintenance-friendly cardan drive; good straight-line stability; low seat height.

Nevada never wanted to be a mere copy of American chopper culture. All you need to do is look at the charismatic Guzzi engine with its cylinders at right angles to the direction of travel and longitudinal crankshaft. This principle has been typical of the Italian motorcycle brand from Lake Como for half a century. And that’s not the only reason why the 750 twin does not want to fit into a typical chopper drawer. The Nevada also takes up design elements of classic muscle bikes from the 80s (Yamaha Vmax) and also wants to offer the rider real touring qualities with comfortable seating. What choppers do not usually have to offer, the Nevada manages to do reasonably well: to accommodate the pillion passenger on board in a reasonably decent way.
You have to be careful when researching used equipment: Not all versions of the Nevada, which has been sold since 1993, are A2-compatible ex works. It fits, for example, with the Base and Club models (from 2000/2002), which are used from 2500 euros.

Evil tongues claim that the Freewind has a completely puffy design that you have to look good first. The latter, however, is not a problem for Suzuki’s compact class travel enduro. The usual tirade of scolding against the Brussels bureaucracy has to be silenced in this case: applicants for the driving license benefit above all from the new regulation of the driving license classes, which has been valid for almost a year. With the new entry-level motorcycle driving license A2, the well-known 34 HP regulation is a thing of the past, after passing the test you can hit the slopes with an increase of 14 HP. Good news also for holders of the previous level driving license: They are also allowed to switch to 48 hp motorcycles without any further measures and – if the level driving license was obtained before January 19, 2013 – even drive all motorcycles after two years without any further horsepower limit.
For A2 holders, advancement to the large, i.e. unlimited, class is not so generously regulated. Only after passing a 40-minute practical driving test on an over 48 HP motorcycle does the performance limit fall, and you finally hold the license without limit in your hand.
Anyone who has always dreamed of a motorcycle from the older generation but did not want to take on the driver’s license hurdle should rethink now. Because the Brussels amendment also makes it easier for motorists to switch to motorcycles. Anyone who obtained their car driver’s license before April 1, 1980 can – theoretically without compulsory driving lessons – register directly at a driving school for a practical driving test for the A2 driving license.

Nothing is impossible. Theoretically, A2 owners can also ride an originally 180 hp super sports bike or a lush 380 kg touring bike. Because almost every motorcycle can be limited to the permitted 35 kW limit using an appropriate throttle kit. One of the largest providers is the Bavarian company Alpha Technik (phone 0 80 36/30 07 20, www.alpha technik.de), which now offers throttle kits to 48 hp for over 200 motorcycles. The effort is manageable: the kit itself costs around 100 euros, depending on the model, plus individual workshop costs for installation plus the fees for changing the vehicle documents. Many retailers now also offer all-inclusive solutions at a fixed price. However, one should refrain from the extreme examples mentioned at the beginning. With a superbike, you would already reach the 35 kW limit after two to three millimeters of gas travel, and a touring bike weighing several hundred pounds is simply hopelessly overwhelmed as a beginner.
