KTM Duke

Off-the-shelf and yet extremely individual – the KTM single-cylinder street sweeper proves impressively that this contradiction works. However, the heavy fun device has its pitfalls.

Thorsten Dentges

The duke, the duke? Anyway, maybe best “the duke”, because the extroverted KTM comes across as something from another world. An indulgent world full of fun. The risk with the Duke (let’s stick with the “they”, The Duke) to go beyond your limits, however, is big. She beguiles with her appearance, that was the case with the first version from 1994. The cheeky design, daring for a series machine at the time, hid the enduro technology, which was initially very down-to-earth. 50 PS even hard-nosed drivers knocked softly on the narrow seat at some point. And brisk kicking off (first two years of construction) is also not for comfort people, so that today this model as a second-hand bike only appeals to hardliners.

The Duke II from 2002, on the other hand, is more civilized with its 54 hp and is much more in demand from second hand. Similar to its ducal predecessor, it ennobled itself straight away to a design piece with noble ingredients: large disc brakes, fine fork, light wheels. Only a little over three hundredweight ready to drive, so even savvy super athletes can easily be tricked into narrow terrain. However, sooner or later too many wild rides lead to a heart attack in a high-pulse single-cylinder. And although the third and newest Duke generation (from 2008) deserves the crown when it comes to stability, prospective buyers shouldn’t expect the longevity of a good touring motorcycle and instead bring a good deal of irrationality with them. Duke remains Duke. That, that, that – why, why, why? Everything is self-explanatory. After the first ignition cycle.

Run-in rocker arm rollers, crankshaft damage, worn gearbox input bearings, defective fork seals – defects that are not uncommon in older (built in 2002 and before), heavily used copies. Mostly the previous owner or owners are to blame: Full throttle in city traffic with a cold engine, wheelie ecstasy and laziness with regular maintenance and oil level checks leave their mark. Technical laypeople should therefore definitely have an expert do the test drive at the on-site appointment, who can interpret mechanical noises or even leave the check to a specialist workshop. In the case of private offers in particular, it is important to have a complete workshop history documented. Since many Dukes have also been given more power by means of carburetor kits and retrofit silencers (favorite: Akrapovic) are just as popular, it is advisable to check the vehicle documents for correct entries of the add-on parts and to take a look at the test marks – be careful if these are not available are!

Used Dukes often go from hand to friend, so trading is primarily a private matter. The basis for negotiations starts at around 2000 euros, but these machines are not infrequently tinkered with conversions with a questionable history or specimens with minor defects. Very few used Dukes have more than 20,000 kilometers on the clock, but the number of interested parties who want to invest more than 6,000 euros is even lower. Professional dealers tend to be more reluctant to trade-in models that are clearly used, but traders occasionally have older Duke IIs or well-maintained ones “Great Dukes” from 2500 euros in the program. If a warranty is important to you as a buyer, you will most likely find it at the authorized dealer, who also sometimes have cheap previous year’s models around 1,000 euros below the new price or as good as new demonstrators from just over 7,000 euros.
