Ducati ST2, 3 and 4 in the used check

The year 1997 terrified the fans: Ducati builds tourist steamers! But the sports tourers turn out to be real Ducatis. ST2, 3 and 4 in the used check.

Jorg Lohse

According to statistics from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), there are almost 2000 Ducati sports tourers on German roads. That is a decent value. After all, the style icon 916 and its successors 996 and 998 have just 400 more registrations. The decision, the program around the category “Suitability for everyday use” to expand was not only spot on, but also gave the Reds from Bologna important impetus for further model policy – keyword Ducati Multistrada 1200.

The first hit was the ST2. It should stand up to the popular all-rounder Honda VFR. The water-cooled two-valve engine came from the hapless 907 i.e., but with a larger bore it brought it to 944 cm³ displacement.

The beefy Desmo-Twin is perfect for long tours. In 1999, the ST4 with the four-valve engine followed from the 916. But the increased power compared to the ST2 (105 instead of 83 hp) was no great pleasure for touring enthusiasts. Ducati expert Klaus Mayerhofer (www.dsm-ducati.de) urgently advises interested parties to take a detailed test drive: “Most touring riders will get off the ST4 disappointed because of the weak torque curve.”

Much more attractive: the ST4s from 2001 with the 117 hp engine from the 996. In the case of the ST3, which was introduced in 2004, long-distance travel enthusiasts will take a critical look at the weak chassis with non-adjustable fork. If you are looking for an ST to travel with a pillion passenger and luggage, you should reach for the ST3s, which offers better reserves with its fully adjustable Showa fork and Ohlins shock absorber.

ST drivers take the model designation seriously and scrub many kilometers on their feet within a short period of time. According to information from Ducati workshops, this is not a big problem. Even types with six-digit mileage show themselves to be technically fit during inspections. According to experts, the ST2, the oldest in the group, shines with a consistently robust appearance. The balance of the ST4 is generally similarly positive and clearly different from the MOTORRAD long-distance test, where almost all highly stressed components (camshafts, valves, pistons, clutch) showed serious damage after 50,000 kilometers.

Used buyers should have dry clutch models on running tracks. check on the clutch basket. The ST types (ST4s from 2005, ST3, ST3s) with oil bath clutches cause significantly fewer problems. A look in the service book shows whether the machine has been regularly serviced and important work such as changing the timing belt has been carried out. Tip: You should also keep an eye on the state of care under the cladding!

Market situation

Which for whom? The ST4 lures with the engine of the 916, but does not suit travel junkies with its comparatively sharp engine tuning. It is comparatively cheap to get. The ST4s is much more in demand, especially in the ABS version from model year 2003 onwards. The situation is similar with the ST3 types. The basic version with its not fully adjustable chassis is frowned upon in the touring warehouse and can be obtained cheaply. The ST3s ABS is much more in demand. The first years of construction of the ST2 are no longer recorded at Schwacke, they are traded on the Internet sales portals from around 2500 euros. According to Schwacke, the ST2 era ends with the year of construction 2003/2004 at just under 5000 euros. The recommended ST4s ABS is valued at 6000 to 7400 euros, the youngest of the group is the ST3s ABS. With prices around 8,000 euros, it is still very expensive.
