There aren’t too many real all-round enduros that cut a decent figure on the road as well as off-road. The Suzuki DR 650 SE is one of them.

Those were the days when machines like the Yamaha XT models or Honda XL were bestsellers on the motorcycle market. With the simple, robust and inexpensive all-rounders, you could go to get bread or go on a long-distance journey with a large tank. But since the 1980s there has not been much that is new in this category from Japan. Instead, the specialists are on the rise, such as the real off-road machines from KTM or Husqvarna. The qualities of the undemanding all-rounders have been forgotten by many. It is no coincidence that after the DR 350 and the mighty DR 800, not only Suzuki has now also withdrawn its inconspicuous but solid model DR 650 SE from the market. Honda’s Dominator also blesses the temporal.
The last new DR are currently being sold off. Since the end of 1995, Suzuki has sold around 4,000 units. The used one that MOTORRAD tracked down is one of four examples that the Limbacher company in Stuttgart-Echterdingen is currently selling. The machine, built in 1998, has 13,700 kilometers on the counter and is expected to change hands for 6499 marks. Scratches and sanded paint on the frame and exhaust are evidence of occasional off-road use.
Despite the three-month downtime, the engine starts on the second attempt. Its running noise: inconspicuously quiet, no rattle of pistons when cold. Without typical single-cylinder vibrations, the engine delivers smoothly and evenly power over the entire speed range – in contrast to its sister model Freewind, Suzuki does not have a display. The seating position is comfortable, only the narrow bench looks hard, as if frozen, at temperatures just above freezing point. The switching paths are a bit long, a matter of getting used to. The chassis is soft and comfortable, and when you brake harder at the front, the telescopic fork plunges deeply into the road, which is no wonder with a spring travel of at least 260 millimeters.
Anyone looking at a used DR 650 SE should first make sure that the engine is still tight. Leaks at the seals of the cylinder base or head cover as well as at the sealing ring on the gearbox output shaft (under the cover in front of the pinion) require a visit to the workshop, i.e. costs that reduce the value. Many DR owners have equipped their machine with a Suzuki main stand (186 marks) for chain maintenance and oil control and an engine protection plate for off-road use (190 marks). Often this also includes side protection bars (JF Motorsport, phone 06002/910377, 150 Marks).
Terrain freaks also equip their DR with the smaller 14-tooth pinion to compensate for the ratio of the too long first gear. This saves the clutch when moving around like a trial. Almost a must for long-distance travelers: the 16-liter Acerbis plastic tank (Buse, around 480 marks). It only holds three liters more than the original, but with the moderate consumption of around 4.5 liters per 100 kilometers, that means around 75 kilometers more radius.
The suspension elements are also frequently converted: The shock absorber, which slackens quickly on off-road tours, has to give way to more rigidly damped models from Ohlins, White Power or Wilbers (from around 800 marks), more progressive fork springs from the same manufacturer (around 180 marks) in the front. to use.
The engine shines? in contrast to the DR 650 predecessor model ?? thanks to a nickel-silicon-carbide coating with remarkable smoothness and, with appropriate care, is good for 60,000 kilometers and more until the first major overhaul. A very solid figure for a single cylinder.
Fortunately, the throttling for beginners to 34 hp for a used vehicle is not a financial tightrope act. Another throttle slide (65 marks) in the carburetor plus about half an hour of labor costs ?? the legal start is ready. And for those with short legs, Suzuki has planned to lower the original 88 millimeter seat height by a full four centimeters at the factory; the shock absorber can be screwed into the deflection in two positions.
The Suzuki DR 650 SE offers a relatively wide range for beginners and advanced users alike. It is a successful compromise for on-road and off-road use and thus the more harmonious concept compared to some lavish single-cylinder travel enduro bikes.

Reader experience – Suzuki DR 650 SE

I bought my DR 650 SE second-hand in 1998 with only 1400 kilometers. Since then I have covered 15,000 kilometers, both on the road and while enduro hiking in Castile. The machine impresses me with its handiness and the easy-to-dose motor. After a tour of the Pyrenees with luggage, I had Technoflex spring elements installed. Recommended, even if the suspension reserves and ground clearance are not on the level of current hard enduro bikes. The only point of criticism: commuting from 120 km / h with coarse tires and the translation too long for the terrain. Throttled to 34 hp, it ran around 30,000 kilometers, until two years later it was easily and cheaply dethrottled and now has a good 56,000 kilometers on it. In cold weather, the oil seal on the output shaft from the gearbox came off several times at the beginning, resulting in heavy oil loss on the rear wheel led. A self-made locking plate can help. The timing chain tensioner seal was also leaking. Both types of damage also occurred on a friend’s machine. The attachment of the chain guide roller broke out of the frame and had to be rewelded. At 50,000 kilometers, the rear wheel and sprocket carrier had to be re-stored. Conclusion: If you only want to travel with one machine, to go to work every day and also want to drive off-road, the alternatives are rare. Market overview – Suzuki DR 650 SE

Although Suzuki has sold almost 4,000 units of the DR 650 SE since 1995, the 2001 model is no longer available. It is now still being offered sporadically at dealerships.
