Was the Suzuki launched in 2001 GSX-R 1000 a milestone? Yes. A little. Not to be compared with a Yamaha R1, which in 1998 revolutionized the big (sport) bike segment with ultra-power and lightweight. Or with a Honda Fireblade, which in 1992 was considered a sporty superlative as a 900 at the time. And the 1000 series Gixxer is certainly not as influential as its old sister GSX-R 750, which in the mid-80s brought that racing feeling to the road like hardly any other motorcycle.

Nevertheless: When the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 appeared, it made sports drivers tingle with its 160 hp and an empty weight of just 194 kilos. The surface-to-surface missile called K1 – the internal Suzuki name – was well received and, together with the successor model K2 (2002), established the good reputation of the GSX-R 1000. In this way: a milestone. But fame based on performance data is short-lived in the world of superbikes, and these first models would be described as stubborn, stiff hips and, well, lame these days after a test drive. By the way, hardly anyone is currently talking about the K3 and K4 (in the range in 2003 and 2004) because, as new vehicles, they were overshadowed by more radical competition.
The K5 presented in 2005, on the other hand, once again achieved the reputation of a milestone. Lighter, slimmer, more filigree and significantly stronger than before, it fought its way to the top in comparison tests and straight into the hearts of hobby racers. Neutral driving behavior, homogeneous power delivery and a sitting posture that is quite comfortable for super athletes also made them look good on country roads and even in dense urban traffic – quite suitable for everyday use. The K5 / K6, which have been sold more than 5500 times in Germany, have retained the nimbus of the “most all-round” Suzuki GSX-R 1000 to this day. The successors could not keep up, from 2010 the sales figures collapsed, second hand they are less often on offer. The K5 and K6 remain the most popular used GSX-R-1000s.

High price level. As popular as the models are, from 7,000 euros even the best-maintained K5 / K6 with less than 20,000 kilometers on the clock are difficult to sell, as those interested in super sports cars tend to squint at current goods (BMW S 1000 RR, Kawasaki ZX-10R).

Completely new model, type designation WVB6. The GSX-R 1000 model, dubbed “K5”, has more compact dimensions, less weight, more displacement and more power. Differences to the K4 model:

The K5 / K6 models of the Suzuki GSX-R 1000 are already over ten years old. Are these old machines even recommendable??
For ambitious racers who want to be at the forefront, probably not. But very few of them are. Most hobby racers drive on a circuit to hone their driving technique and not to get the most out of the latest technology. So why not ten-year-old Suzi with her almost 180 hp? I wouldn’t call this underpowered. In addition, the motorcycle has a great chassis and low weight, so you can stamp times on the asphalt that inspire respect. And the performance is definitely enough for the country road. At the time, the K5 was considered an almost indomitable beast. From today’s perspective, I would say: It is the best balanced GSX-R 1000 and for that reason alone the best choice for sporty country road drivers.
Don’t worry that the mechanics will suffer a lot after years of sporting pace?
No, these things just work. We have customers who have already spooled more than 100,000 kilometers on their machines, mechanically everything is usually flawless. The engine may need some oil, but that is harmless. What happens more often are problems with plastic parts. Vibrations and the ravages of time gnaw away at the plastic, which then no longer looks so fresh, cracks appear, mounts are no longer so tight, which is noticeable by rattling. Bad low beam is also typical. The reason for this is plastic abrasion caused by vibrations in the headlight, which is deposited as a powder on the reflector and thus reduces the brightness. A new headlight costs around 500 euros plus installation costs.
Is there anything else to consider?
Yes, a reinforcement plate should have been attached to the frame from an official conversion campaign. This is actually always the case with specimens that are maintained in workshops, if in doubt it is better to have a professional check it out.
Any tips on conversion and tuning?
As already mentioned, the performance is sufficient. If there are a few hundred left after the purchase, I would rather take care of the chassis, steering head bearings, steering damper, shock absorber and fork have to be checked during the inspection anyway. For example, if the shock absorber is pretty worn out, no problem. A professional overhaul of the original part with a new spring, oil and gas can work wonders as a refreshment.
