Action cam with WLAN function

Communication specialist Sena has also been offering action cams for some time; the Sena Prism Tube WiFi is new, which now combines the convenient operation of the well-known Sena Prism Tube with WiFi functionality. We tested the Prism Tube WiFi and were able to compare it with two GoPro models.

As exciting as the possibilities of 360-degree cameras are, the classic action cam is still recommended for most cinematic purposes. Also and especially for taking pictures while riding a motorcycle. A particularly well thought-out alternative to the industry leader GoPro is the Sena Prism Tube WiFi.

Operation optimized for motorcyclists

In contrast to many other action cams, the Sena Prism Tube WiFi does not have to be started by pressing buttons and buttons that are difficult to access, operation is much simpler: switching on and starting recording happen together by simply pulling the handy ring on the housing forwards.

This also works perfectly with gloves, which means that the Sena has a lot ahead of the GoPro competition in terms of operation. The tubular shape of the Sena Prism Tube WiFi is also significantly more aerodynamic than the mostly rectangular box shape of the competition. Since the tube can be rotated in its holder at the same time, a straight image can be achieved regardless of where it is attached to the helmet, without the horizon appearing crooked.

Many recording modes, weaknesses in video quality

The Sena Prism Tube WiFi films optionally in 2.7 K, i.e. 2719 by 1524 pixels, with 30 frames per second or alternatively in 1080p / 60, i.e. 1920 by 1080 pixels at 60 frames per second. Unfortunately, the result seems a bit overdone. For most purposes, an image that has been less post-processed by the camera itself would be better; additional sharpness can then still be achieved in post-production if necessary. We hope that Sena will use a firmware update to address this excessive sharpening. In terms of dynamic range (simultaneous display of light and dark image areas), the Sena Prism Tube WiFi is comparable to the performance of the GoPro Hero 3+ and GoPro Hero 4, the color rendering is a bit warmer, but very realistic.

The camera has an integrated microphone that picks up ambient noise, and the additional external microphone, which can be attached to the helmet and which records your own voice if necessary, is very popular. The Sena Prism Tube WiFi also provides information about the recording status, storage capacity and battery charge via the speaker that is also included. Another plus point that the WiFi version has ahead of the Sena Prism Tube, which has been available for some time, is the ability to connect to the smartphone via WiFi. This allows the camera to be controlled via both iOS and Android apps. A small point of criticism is the 1000 mAh battery, which should be more powerful.

Noticed positively: Operation suitable for motorcycles, good aerodynamics, helmet microphone

Noticed negatively: Over-sharpened image
