Improved in many details

For off-road freaks who don’t want to sit on an Enduro from Mattighofen, Sherco offers an alternative. The French bikes impress with their independent technical appearance – also with the 2021 models.

I.n year one after the 20th anniversary of the off-road forge in the south of France, the focus of the developers was on detailed work. As before, you can choose between the standard model, the "Racing", and upgraded with additional parts and chassis components from Kayaba instead of WP Suspension "Factory"-Model to be chosen.

Detail work for improved durability

Peter Teichmann

For the 2021 model year, the four-stroke engines have only been optimized in detail. In the small four-stroke engine with a capacity of 250 and 300 cm³, the durability of the connecting rod bearing of the crankshaft is to be improved by replacing the previous roller bearing with a plain bearing. This went hand in hand with a slight revision of the motor housing in order to achieve improved oil circulation and thus also a lower operating temperature. The risk of unintentionally stalling the engine at low speeds is also to be reduced. In contrast, the intention is to switch off the motor in the head position, which is forced by an inclination sensor. An optimized combustion chamber results in less compression, which makes the engine smoother to drive. New camshafts should also improve the engine’s performance. On the factory four-stroke models, the new titanium exhaust system from Akrapovič is not only eye-catching, it is also said to produce more power at high engine speeds.

The modifications to the 450 cc four-stroke engine are limited to new gears for the oil pump, starter motor and balance shaft, which saves around 500 grams in weight.

Tailored for amateurs

On the route, the new Shercos were able to impress with their easy drivability. The Kayaba spring elements in the Factory models in particular convey a lot of trust. The relatively soft set-up is tailored to the majority of the amateur drivers. That’s a good thing, even if ambitious drivers have to have the suspension specialist modified for more puncture resistance and greater reserves.

Of the four displacement variants, the 300 version clearly stands out as the woolly milk pig laying eggs. It impresses with very agile handling and a powerful, but manageable and easy-to-drive engine. The 450 variant – just like the powerful 500 sister – is more likely to look for expansive and fast terrain as a purpose. sw
