Pons, who won the title in the 250cc World Cup in 1988 and 1989 and is currently a team owner in Moto2, is accused of evading taxes of around 2.7 million euros in Spain between 2010 and 2014. According to the Spanish newspaper ABC, Pons has been investigating possible tax evasion for two years. The first irregularities were discovered in the accounts for 2010. Further investigations revealed suspicious factors until 2014. Pons is accused of having concealed his actual center of life and that of the racing team in Spain with pseudo-homes in Monaco and London. He is also said to have tried to hide money from the Spanish and Catalan tax authorities with bogus companies. Now the public prosecutor threatens him with 24 years imprisonment and a fine of 12 million euros.

Pons defends himself

Pons himself contradicts his accusers in a letter that his lawyers wrote and which the Marca newspaper has received. He lived in Monaco and London and also paid taxes in Great Britain.

After retiring from racing in 1990, Pons founded his eponymous 500GP / MotoGP team Pons Racing, which competed successfully with drivers Loris Capirossi, Alex Barros and Max Biaggi until 2006. After that, Pons Racing has focused on the Moto2 series, which peaked in 2013 with Espargaro’s title win, and is one of the title favorites for 2020 with Lorenzo Baldassarri.
