Marc Marquez at the Andalusian GP: feat or unconsciousness ?

Spanish GP - Marc Marquez at the Andalusian GP: feat or recklessness? - Used HONDA

Marc Marquez, who had surgery on his right humerus on Tuesday, took to the Jerez circuit two days later with the crazy ambition to compete in the Andalusian Grand Prix, the second race of the 2020 MotoGP season ! Is the Honda official admirable of unconsciousness ?

MotoGP history has many memorable injury returns, such as when Mick Doohan got back on his 500 2-stroke in 1992 just two months after coming close to having a leg amputated after his crash in Assen (the Netherlands). The Australian would return to victory the following season, before wearing the first of his five crowns in August 1994 !

More recently, Jorge Lorenzo made an impression when he competed in the 2013 Dutch GP less than two days after having had his shoulder surgery. And the Mallorcan was not at his first attempt: during his first season in MotoGP, in 2008, it was in a wheelchair and with two broken ankles that he presented himself at the French GP after his fall in China. Balance sheet? A second place in Bugatti behind his teammate Valentino Rossi !

  • MNC file : Injured drivers, is Rossi the example to follow ?

The latter also offered a memorable display of determination in 2017, when he took back the handlebars of his official Yamaha at the GP of Aragon less than three weeks after having suffered a crash on an enduro motorcycle. Each time, it is with courage and selflessness that these pilots put their bodies to death to stay in the race….

Marquez is already back in Jerez !

Marc Marquez, reigning world champion, is unsurprisingly made of the same wood: the Honda official – who is leaving the hospital in Barcelona (Spain) where he had his shoulder operated on – will try to participate in the GP of Andalusia this Sunday! This information comes directly from the HRC, via a tweet announcing his return to Jerez.

The native of Cervera – who fell heavily last Sunday on this same circuit – obviously hopes to be declared "fit" for the medical examination scheduled for Thursday in Andalusia at 13:30. Marc Marquez will meet Cal Crutchlow, who is also trying a courageous comeback just two days after his !

If the doctors give the green light to the two Honda riders, they will be able to get back into the saddle on Friday at 9:55 am for the first free practice. Or about 72 hours after spending on the pool table! In Marquez’s case, the risk is enormous: the damage could be irreparable if he falls again, even though the soft tissue around the plate that stabilizes his fracture has not yet healed….

N ° 93 also takes the risk of delaying the calcification of his broken bone: such a fracture generally requires three months to completely "re-weld". Marquez intends to shorten this convalescence to three days !

The rage to conquer … the pain ?

"His participation in Jerez is completely ruled out," nevertheless assured Doctor Xavier Mir on the evening of the Spanish GP, as he prepared to operate on the Honda official following his nasty high side. Alberto Puig, not known for his tenderness, also encouraged his star driver to take his time to heal his wounds: "we have a four-year contract with Marc, so no need to rush," assured the HRC team manager.

But we must believe that this scenario does not satisfy the eight-time world champion, pushed to his limits by Maverick Viñales and – above all – Fabio Quartararo. The defending champion is preparing to take up the challenge of an inevitably painful race, despite the effectiveness of the painkillers that the MotoGP doctors will give him.

Is the game worth the candle? Yes, if he manages to score a few points at the end of his heroic attempt without aggravating his injury. With the 2020 season only counting thirteen races at this stage, capitalizing on each event is an absolute necessity. But we dare not imagine the consequences if the hot Catalan once again made mistakes…
