The BMW R 18 should establish itself among the heavyweights in the large cruiser market. And because customizing is also very popular in this segment, BMW immediately sent its Big Boxer into battle with the appropriate systems. The modular structure should make the way easier for renovators in many areas. For inspiration, BMW itself repeatedly lets artists approach its boxer.

The most recent R 18 conversion comes from the German customizer Kingston Custom from Gelsenkirchen, who has also been on the road for Honda on a works contract and has already done one himself R 100 RS Had lent a hand. Dirk Oehlerking calls his design Spirit of Passion with strong ArtDeco bonds. But also a good portion of the BMW 328 – the roadster from the 1930s – is in the process of being converted.

Disguised wheels, grille with car bonds

Even if the Spirit of Passion conversion seems extreme, Oehlerking has left the frame and the entire technology untouched. but all the more passion and craftsmanship flowed into the disguise. It spans the entire front wheel and has a high BMW kidney grille on the front, which is strongly reminiscent of the aforementioned BMW 328 from the 1930s. The BMW logo sits above it, as it did on the roadster. And one floor higher, embedded in the cladding, is a round LED headlight. At the very top sits a tiny, clamped stub disk as a windbreak for the driver. The fairing flanks sweep up over and under the cylinders of the boxer engine. The exhaust of the BMW R 18 was modified by Oehlerking in the Kingston Roadster style and now acts as a side pipe. For the saddle he used universal accessories. The indicators were replaced by Kellermann indicators.

The rear wheel is also spectacular – or better said, its full fairing. Except for a small area where the tire makes contact with the road, it disappears under a two-part cover from which a fin grows at the rear, which carries the round taillight.

The original paintwork and the lines were taken over in the fairing and in the fender and some details were added in Kingston style. The suspension and tank are original. The whole design is based on a classic ArtDeco style.

Conclusion

BMW accompanies the market launch of the new R 18 with various conversion projects by well-known customizers. There they were Tin man R 18, the R 18 Dragster from Roland Sands, as well as BMW’s own creations. All bikes should show the potential of the new cruiser.
