With only 109 registrations in 2018, to say that the Yamaha YZF-R3 did not find its audience in France is a no-brainer. But his first evolution could boost his career thanks to his extra rigor and sex appeal.. Test of a naturally A2 small sports bike that deserves to be (re) known !

M1 style. The 2019 R3 takes over the front of the Superport R6, with an air inlet identical to that of the MotoGP M1 between its two headlights. This appendix is fictitious – because not connected to the intake -, but would nevertheless allow better ventilation of the radiator. And then, what style !

Good in all respects. The resentation is correct, although a notch below the YZF-R125 and its better quality equipment (caliper, swingarm, etc.). The welds and the electrical network are quite discreet. The ABS control unit cleverly hidden in front of the shock absorber and the honeycomb plastic plate in front of the silencer – which dresses the exhaust while avoiding burning its heel – are all witnesses of the care taken to the finish.

First to a (p) ero. This restyling is not only favorable to aesthetics: it would also reduce the aerodynamic pressure by "9%", resulting in a top speed of "8 km / h". MNC came close to 190 km / h (odometer) on a portion of the German motorway opportunely discovered near Valencia (Spain)…

Sportivo-GT. LThe handlebar is lowered by 22 mm and opens from 32 to 34 °, while the tank of identical capacity (14 liters) loses 20 mm in height and widens by 31.4 mm. The saddle – very accessible – is at 780 mm and the legs are folded back without excess. The position, a hint of sportier, is pleasant and versatile: the exclusive YZF-R125 can take inspiration from it !

Practice. The practical aspects are reduced to their bare minimum: non-adjustable clutch and brake levers, rubber-free footrests, space under the saddle just sufficient to slip a yellow vest, complete instrumentation but without control on the handlebars. The mirrors, on the other hand, offer a good view to the rear. !

Bi and cheerful. The in-line twin of the R3 does not change for 2019: this block wedged at 180 ° and compressed to 11.6 to 1 outputs 42 hp and 29.6 Nm. Its direct rivals are doing a little better thanks to their larger displacement: 45 hp and 38 Nm for the 399 cc twin of the Ninja 400 and 44 hp and 35 Nm for the 373.2 cc single cylinder of the KTM RC390.

Simple and efficient. The R3 renews its tubular steel frame (identical caster and column angle of 95 mm and 25 °). Its Kayaba shock absorber – adjustable in preload – is unchanged, but its tuning optimized. A 37 mm Kayaba inverted fork – not adjustable – replaces the previous telescopic. The full weight remains at 169 kg. Its suspensions swing on 129.5 mm and 124.5 mm.

The foot in the stirrup. The simple axially mounted 2-piston caliper clamps the 298mm front disc quite softly: and say that the YZF-R125 is entitled to a very effective radial clamp with 4-pistons! All the more unfortunate that at the rear, the simple 220 mm disc is absent subscribers.

Good grip. The YZF-R3 is fitted with Dunlop Sportmax tires in 110/70/17 and 140/70/17. These reasonable dimensions highlight its agility, while the grip and traction are very satisfactory. To the point of easily titillating the nipples of his footrests, a little low in very sporty driving and / or on the circuit !

A masterpiece. The instrumentation is entrusted to a large LCD screen, with black inscriptions on a white background. This dashboard is readable, well laid out and pleasantly complete: speed, tachometer, gear engaged, time, fuel gauge, two trips, totalizer, fuel consumption, engine temperature. However, the push buttons at the bottom of the screen are small, so it is not easy to operate with heavy gloves. A remote control on the handlebars would solve the problem … .
