This is how MOTORRAD tests

Sporty motorcycle leather jackets put to the test

mps photo studio

MOTORRAD determined the impact absorption of the protectors on the drop test bench.

Of course, leather has to be registered, that is clear. But you can usually tell a good fit when you try it on for the first time. Are the proportions right, nothing squeezes or pinches? Two riders of normal stature, for whom standard clothing sizes usually fit well, went on a sporty test round with all test jackets over mountainous, winding stretches in the Swabian-Franconian Forest in order to test fit and comfort in typical movement dynamics. All driving impressions were systematically recorded, with particular attention paid to the protector seat and air conditioning.

For the safety criterion, the testers examined the upper material – in this case leather and textile inserts – for its protective effect and, among other things, determined the thickness of the leather in various jacket zones. Doubling of material and reinforcements in fall zones were rated positively. On this occasion, the workmanship and equipment (thermal lining, pockets, protectors, zippers, etc.) could be viewed critically and classified accordingly.

Sporty motorcycle leather jackets put to the test

mps photo studio

Although all of them complied with the limit values, there were large measurement differences.

Last but not least, we went to the laboratory to test protectors. There the testers determined residual force values after impacts and observed the force reduction behavior of the guards. Top marks were given to values below “Level 2” – residual force below 20 kilonewtons (kN) – with a linear force reduction (see curve from the Hein Gericke protector in the diagram on the left). A comparatively weak shock absorption (see values and steep increase in force in the example of Probiker) was nevertheless rewarded with points if it was within “Level 1” (residual force

Final scoring

Sporty motorcycle leather jackets put to the test

mps photo studio

The final placements in the comparative test of sporty motorcycle leather jackets.

The most expensive sporty motorcycle leather jacket wins, the cheapest in the test carries the red lantern. A test report with an announcement? No! Because other inexpensive jackets (Modeka Hawking, Hein Gericke Misano) show how it’s done: You can get flawless jackets for less than 300 euros – just half the purchase price of the Alpinestars Celer, which is specially equipped with expensive protectors. For 400 euros, you can find consistently good short jackets that differ little in quality from each other.

When it comes to the features, there are more likely to be deviations: thermal lining, fully equipped protectors, variety of pockets … The price depends on that – and obviously also on clever marketing. In any case, there are no real outliers downwards. Even with the last-placed Probiker PRX-7, you are still properly and safely dressed.

Protectors are not standard everywhere

Since not all sporty motorcycle leather jackets are equipped with back protectors (and chest protectors) as standard, we left the suppliers with appropriate equipment, which is noticeable in a higher purchase price. This resulted in an illustrious brand test field: partly heavy leather armor, partly airy summer blousons. France was represented by Furygan, Holland by Rev’it, Icon for the USA, and IXS from Switzerland. Most of the candidates for this international comparison came from Germany.

The rejection of motorcycle clothing Dainese was not entirely understandable – without giving a reason. It’s a shame, because the Italians have some suitable models in their portfolio. Competitor Alpinestars, on the other hand, accepted the sporting challenge and sent a current jacket for Italy into the race. But please don’t be confused: Even if the suppliers are at home in Europe or the USA – the sporty motorcycle leather jackets from this comparison test are all made in Asia. Which is anything but a short way at first …

Tried: Combi jacket okay too?

Sporty drivers prefer sporty leather. Since one-piece suits usually only make sense on the racetrack, leather two-piece suits are very popular.

Beware of bad purchases! Some jackets don’t work “down without”.

For short trips – as practice shows – the top is often combined with (biker) jeans. Because more convenient. But is that actually a good idea? The provider Polo kindly gave us a combination jacket for an exemplary non-competitive evaluation.

Result: Without the matching, firmly connected trousers, there are major deficits, especially in terms of fit and comfort. The jacket slips up enormously during the journey, it pulls like pike soup and the protectors are wrong. In contrast, the FLM blouson from the same company, designed for relaxed, fluffy, fast country road trips, feels like a fine training jacket. It just fits.
