In mid-April 2021, the Indian motorcycle giant Hero entered into a partnership with the Taiwanese battery exchange system operator Gorgoro for the Indian market. Hero Motorcycles is one of the largest two-wheeler manufacturers in the world with 5.7 million units per year and the market leader in India’s million dollar market.

The partnership sees the development of a battery exchange system for the Indian market. In addition, Hero will bring electric scooters to the Indian market that use Gogoro’s battery replacement technology. Hero and Gogoro want to limit their cooperation initially to India, but later expand it to other markets as well. Hero serves 40 markets worldwide.

Market entry in China

In mid-May 2021, Gogoro announced a deal for the Chinese market. The Taiwanese were able to win the two country-wide two-wheeler manufacturers Dachangjiang Group (DCJ) and Yadea as China partners. Both want to bring small electric models to the Chinese market that are compatible with the Gogoro battery exchange system. DCJ and Yadea will also jointly invest in a new operating company to provide and maintain the infrastructure for Gogoro’s battery swap system. The partners expect the first battery exchange station to be introduced this year. Initially, the plan is to concentrate on a Chinese mega-metropolis that has not yet been mentioned before rolling out the battery exchange system to other regions.

Cooperation with Foxconn

In June 2021, Gogoro will then announce the really big premium: The Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn will work as a strategic partner with Gogogoro. That could not only make global expansion possible, but also accelerate it. First of all, the two companies want to work together in several areas, for example when it comes to smart batteries, vehicle technology and manufacturing. Foxconn is currently the largest electronics company in the world and manufactures components for numerous items that we use every day. The company is also already represented in the field of electric cars, but the two-wheeler sector is new territory.

First India, then other markets

Gogoro has been building and selling electric scooters with exchangeable batteries since 2015 and operates its own exchange system for this purpose. In the meantime, other manufacturers such as Yamaha or PGO are also using Gogoro replaceable batteries. Around a quarter of all electric scooters in Taiwan are already running with the Gogoro system. A total of 390,000 drivers exchange up to 265,000 battery modules every day at around 2,100 exchange stations, i.e. a good 70% of the batteries are exchanged once a day. The Gogoro system is already running on a smaller scale in South Korea. There are first attempts at walking in the USA and Europe.

How do you feel about the electric motorcycle??

Out of the question for me.

The future of the two-wheeler for urban traffic.

There is no getting around the electric motorcycle.

Conclusion

India relies heavily on electromobility for small two-wheelers. Hero, as one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, also jumps on this train and agrees with Gorgoro to set up a nationwide battery exchange system. Gogoro has also found suitable partners in China. And since electronics giant Foxconn is still on board, there is no longer any doubt that Gogoro’s e-offensive is taking off worldwide.
