Electric motorcycle like a mountain bike

The Chinese manufacturer Sur-Ron has launched the electric motorcycle Firefly, an incredibly cool entry-level model with off-road ambitions. The KSR Group brings it to Germany for 4,199 euros.

D.he Sur-Ron Firefly is primarily intended to appeal to younger customers who do not drive the scooters common in this segment (vehicle class L1e; max. 45 km / h, max. 50 cm³ for gasoline vehicles or max. 4 kW for diesel and electric vehicles) want. The Firefly concept is correspondingly far removed from a scooter. At first glance, the e-bike looks like a mountain bike. But nobody has to pedal here.

Hardly bigger than a bicycle

The Sur-Ron Firefly is driven by an air-cooled 2.05 kW electric motor, which transfers its drive torque to the rear wheel via a multi-stage coaxial gearbox and a chain. Energy is supplied by a removable lithium-ion battery pack with a capacity of 1,920 Wh. This should enable ranges of up to 69 km. The charging time is specified between 3 and 6 hours.

The electric motor delivers a continuous output of just over 2 kW.

For the frame, the Firefly relies on aluminum, which results in a frame weight of only 7.8 kg. In total, the Firefly only weighs 47 kg (excluding the battery) – light enough for most bike carriers. The specified maximum load is 93 kg.

Overall, the Firefly comes to a length of 1,860 mm, a width of 780 mm and a height of 1,050 mm. The wheelbase is 1,230 mm and the ground clearance is 270 mm. The Firefly stands on 19-inch wheels with 70/100 tires at the front and back.

At the front, an air-sprung upside-down fork with 200 mm suspension travel cushions and cushions, the rear swing arm is supported by a central spring strut with 210 mm suspension travel. 


Sur-Ron

With plenty of spring travel, the Firefly is also suitable for off-road use.

Hydraulic brakes with four-piston calipers do the braking work on both wheels.

As a class L1e-B vehicle, the Sur-Ron Firefly can be driven with an AM small vehicle driver’s license (from 15 or 16 years of age, depending on the country). Any other driver’s license, such as class B, is also sufficient.

The Sur-Ron Firefly will be launched on the market in November 2018 in red and gray. Price: 4,199 euros.
