The first Suzuki “Big DR” appeared in 1987. The trail age was at its peak, encouraged by the success of “Paris-Dakar” type rallies. Japanese manufacturers have all declined their single-cylinder range in 600-650 cc and some such as Honda or Yamaha are moving upmarket by using twin-cylinder engines (Africa Twin and Super Tenere).
For its part, Suzuki chooses to counter its direct competitors with a very large single cylinder. The first 750 cc model developed 50 horsepower for 179 kg empty. Lighter by 15 to 20 kg compared to a twin, the DR 750 remains handicapped by its power which, without being ridiculous, brings it closer to 650 cc single cylinders than to the flagships of the competition (the Africa Twin develops 62 horsepower and the SuperT reaches 70 horsepower).
In 1990, Suzuki inflated its BIG a little further by increasing the stroke of its big bowl by 5 mm to reach the respectable displacement of 779 cc. The power climbs by 4 horses and the torque exceeds 6 m.kg, accessible from 4000 rpm. The characteristic poum poum is still there, but in an even more muffled register. The engine bangs under 2500 rpm and must be kept in mid-range, like any self-respecting gromono.
For the rest, little change. The aesthetic of the beast does not change and retains its duckbill as well as its characteristic exhaust. The cycle part keeps its first qualities: Incisive, it only fishes by a slightly weak front brake, a high center of gravity perched and a saddle height inaccessible to less than one meter eighty.
The BIG DR feels at ease on national and departmental roads where it purrs under 4000 rpm at 100km / h. At this speed, the pilot can almost count the piston strokes resonating in the chest. The engine tows endlessly to the delight of the driver.
Although its single cylinder does not predispose it to motorway use, the DR800S maintains a good 140 km / h on the motorway. (Editor’s note: To believe that Suzuki had found the anti-repression weapon for 15 years).
Consumption is average for the time and thanks to its enormous fuel tank (28 liters), the autonomy can reach 500 kms in quiet use. However, the spartan comfort of the saddle does not allow emptying a tank in one go..
Economical, this big road trail was negotiated at prices sometimes lower than its 600 – 650cc competitors (approx. 35,000 FF for a Honda 650 Dominator) and much lower than the competition with 2 cylinders (approx. 48,000 FF for an Africa Twin, 46,000 FF for a Super Tenere).
Its price, its atypical aesthetic and its character, very typical “gromono”, charmed many fans of the genre. However, Suzuki released in 1992 a new technically similar version but with an aesthetic that wanted to be more consensual with softer lines and a double exhaust under the saddle inspired by that of the Honda Dominator. The DR800S Big will end its career in 1997.
