Suzuki GSX 1100 S KATANA 1981

At the end of the 1970s, Suzuki was faced with an image problem on the European market. Its models are technically very efficient, but the aesthetic too wise does not dream the biker of the old continent. Suzuki therefore calls on third-party designers to offer a motorcycle suitable for Europe..

In 1979, Target Design submitted to Suzuki Japan a first prototype named ED-1 (Euro-Design 1). The Japanese brand is immediately won over. This first prototype will be used as a model for the Katana 550cc and 650cc. In the process, Suzuki ordered a second style study for its 1100 cc model: the ED-2. The objective of the future Katana 1100 is to present revolutionary aerodynamics and optimal ergonomics.

The 2 models were presented at the Cologne show in 1980 and immediately caused a sensation. The line of the ED-2 does not leave you indifferent. And if it has its detractors, they are not more numerous than the fans of the first hour.

Technically, Suzuki having at that time one of the best bases (the GSX 1100 engine), the newcomer cannot be criticized on this point..

The GSX1100S Katana (and its 750cc and 1000cc sisters) was marketed in the summer of 1981. In the meantime, it went to Pininfarina for a wind tunnel study in order to optimize the aerodynamics of its fork crown fairing. The 1100 wins a windshield.

As soon as it was released, the big Katana won the title of the fastest production motorcycle in the world. Suzuki brought out a racing beast, but it was immediately perceived as an uncomfortable motorcycle in everyday life. This bike needs to be driven fast and on a good road surface to get its most out of it. The work of the suspensions loses its superb as soon as the asphalt deteriorates and the very forward handlebars break the wrists. In short, the eldest Katana is exclusive.

It will regularly undergo small evolutions until 1984 when a new model will appear. It will remain relatively little diffused in France, but it will be a great success in other countries of Europe, in particular in Great Britain and in Germany..
