Is there still a need to introduce the Suzuki Endurance Racing Team? More commonly known as SERT, this team represents Endurance on its own. An icon, a reference, which has often won, sometimes doubted, always fought to the end.
In this team, the two most emblematic figures are without context Dominique Meliand and the Suzuki GSX-R. Meliand is the team manager. The Chef, as the members of SERT call him. A man of extraordinary efficiency and aura: when he speaks, everyone stops moving and listens to him; when his motorbike is rolling, everyone is watching for what he is going to do. And when it comes to endurance, no one knows more than him: he was there before the GSX-R 1000 existed, and even before the GSX-R 750 existed. His first victory dates back to 1980: the 1000 km of Zwelteg.
Since then, SERT has won in every type of event: The Bol d’Or, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Liège, Nurburgring, Suzuka, Albacete, Doha, Mugello, Silverstone … The list is long. On Dominique’s shelves, there are 10 trophies quite apart: those of the world endurance champion.
However, the team is not invincible. Christophe Guyot and GMT 94 regularly steals the show and wins. Kawasaki is also giving it a hard time, then and now. BMW has recently joined the fight. But Le Chef has unparalleled experience and a leading weapon: the GSX-R 1000.
The GSX-R is linked to Meliand as a rear wheel to a swing arm. Besides, Suzuki considers the man as the uncle of this machine. Under her blue and white coat of arms, the sportswoman of Hammamatsu is one of the most popular motorcycles, both literally and figuratively. All those who know the SERT were taken aback by the 2011 livery. A good dose of yellow came to squat the clothes of the bike. The explanation is simple: Dunlop has invested a lot more this year; in return, the SERT offers him more visibility.
Imposing by its presence, the GSX-R is also by its size. It’s not a small bike, far from it, but that doesn’t prevent it from having exceptional agility. The super-light OZ magnesium rims and the quasi-prototype tires have a lot to do with it. A good slimming cure drops the weight by almost 20 kilos, this machine showing 185 kgs all full..
In endurance racing, it is above all necessary to go fast, but as a priority, to ride for a long time. On the power side, the team modestly admits a 195 horsepower cavalry. There is actually a lot more in the boiler but the exact figures are secret – besides, no top team specifies the real power developed by their bikes. Finding horsepower, torque, and above all engine availability is the job of the ECU and Yoshimura parts grafted onto this rocket (clutch, camshafts, etc.). A pair of Devil titanium exhausts take care of the gas exhaling.
If you have the opportunity to approach it closely, linger for a long time and detail this superb front end. It alone sums up ‘endurance and what it takes to venture into it. We are of course in the top of the top, but the recipe for all the teams is the same: to save time. The Suzuki is loaded with gear to make any racer drool. It starts with a factory 43mm Showa fork. You will find around it a sensor to inform the acquisition of data on the sagging of the tubes, Nissin 6-piston brake calipers mounted radially connected to a master cylinder signed Nissin too – between them, Staubli junctions allow separation of the hoses in 1 second. But especially matte the parts and additional plates on the lower fork. They allow you to rotate the brake calipers without removing the fender and thus take out the wheel in a flash. Try it yourself: remove the front wheel axle and try to remove the wheel without removing the mudguard or the calipers….…. Less visible but even more complex, the rear wheel change system makes it possible to change the boot in less than 5 seconds, the longest being to unscrew and then screw the wheel axle back on..
Riding for a long time means changing regularly and quickly your gommards, your pilot, and refueling quickly. The 24-liter tank is fitted with 2 zenith valves in which the fuel puffs out at an average speed of 6 liters / second. With full fuel, the motorcycle can run on the track for approximately 55 minutes.
As formidable as it is, the SERT’s GSX-R 1000 is not the absolute weapon, however. She won the qualifiers and the 2011 Bol d’Or, but she wasted courtesy in Albacete. Suzuka being the stronghold of the Japanese, let’s not add it into the equation. There are 2 races left, the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 8 Hours of Doha, to determine who will be the 2011 endurance world champion. As every year, the SERT is aiming for this objective and will do everything to achieve it. Will this ultra-prepared GSX-R do all the work? Of course not ! A victory in Endurance is the work and involvement of a whole team. But when you have such a machine between the pognes, what do you want to do if not want to win ?!?
