Suzuki SV 650 X 2019

After a timid Cafe Racer version (100 copies) and an irrelevant Scrambler version, Suzuki continues the seduction operation of its new SV650, which is struggling to find its audience. With its discreet allure and its simple updating ’aftertaste of the 1999 version, this SV is indeed slow to attract young drivers attracted by much more daring competition.. And yet it does not lack qualities this Suzette with its timeless twin which rocked a whole generation. Fun, accessible and very balanced, all she lacks in the end is a less consensual personality to restart the machine after a more than gloomy Gladius episode..

Here is the SV 650 X which will perhaps find its audience in a period when manufacturers are betting a lot on the neo-retro trend..

What does this version X bring to the SV.
On the mechanical side, it’s simple: Nothing at all. The 76hp of the V-twin and its generous torque have largely proven their worth to guard against circumstantial changes. The flourishes that appeared during its rebirth in 2016 such as Low RPM Assist (starting aid and driving at low speed) and the Suzuki Easy Start System (no need to stay pressed on the starter) are therefore still there..

It is therefore on the packaging and a bit of sportiness that Suzuki has worked to give more face to its roadster.

And if his face causes you, it’s no wonder. This SV 650 X takes up most of the SV 650 Rally Concept presented at Osaka in 2016. Starting with its gray and black color.
An “old-fashioned” two-tone fork crown then nicely encompasses the upper part of the headlight and small side scoops placed in the extension of this trim give the impression that a half-fairing has been grafted. Cafe-racer spirit assured, especially as this X also adopts half-handlebars to complete its mutation. The driving position, more forward, is therefore modified for a little more sportiness. In the same vein, the fork is now equipped with a preload adjustment absent on the standard SV. The rear monoshock is identical, but comfort should be improved by adopting a more qualitative padded saddle and of course more “retro”. As with the SV 650, the X receives 4-piston brake calipers for 2019.

Already present on the Rally-Concept to pay homage to the road rally cars of the 70s, two long LED lights give a little more character to this SV 650 X. Unfortunately these are not part of the basic equipment and it would be necessary to go through the catalog of options to benefit from these additional double-optics…. Pity.

Finally, this SV650X leaves a little taste of unfinished business. The idea is pretty good but we would have liked the Hamamatsu firm to go a little further by grafting a specific exhaust (the double silencer of the cafe-racer version would have been perfect!), By placing the mirrors at the end of the handlebars. or by adopting rims different from the standard SV … for example.

But this SV 650 X nevertheless has the merit of offering an alternative to the ever-expanding choice of classic-modern-thing-thing roadsters (I can no longer hear the word neo-retro….).
And finally, who better than the SV can legitimately carry the banner of the return to favor of machines with the look of yesteryear, which was already carving its way almost 20 years ago?
